    Terrible service!

I went to Xtreme Hair in December 2006 for a cut and color. Since I knew they would be busy, I made sure to make an appointment before I went. I arrive at my appointment time and am told I have to wait a few minutes. Fine. So I sit in the lobby, and 15 minutes come and go. Then I hear that my stylist is finishing up with the person he's working on. She says, "You don't have to blowdry my hair if you're in a hurry." He says "No, not at all," and takes another 15 minutes to do this, even though I am clearly waiting. Fifteen minutes after that, I am still waiting even though other customers have come and gone. Finally, after 45 minutes, I tell them I'm leaving and to cancel my appointment. The desk person's response is basically a shrug. Apparently if you are a new customer, you don't matter to them. They could have the best haircuts in the world, but I would never recommend this salon to anyone. Customer service and basic respect is much more important.

    Starbucks: the viral coffee shop

I don't like Starbucks. I just don't see the appeal. First of all, it's always crowded and you have to wait for your coffee for a long time. Secondly, the coffee is way to strong and not even that good. And lastly, the coffee is way too expensive for what you get. Every once in a while I will stop in and get a tea, but I could make the same tea at home for cents on the dollar. The coffee drinks also have a crapload of calories, and the one in Bowie does not have soy milk. I'd rather go across the street to Panera.

    Yummy food and great beer

This restaurant is really good, and they have a wonderful variety of beers available, many that are brewed in-house. The menu is better than what you would find at a Friday's, with innovative dishes from all around the world. Prices are also reasonable, at about 10 to 15 dollars a plate. The atmosphere is quieter than at most bars, as you can actually hear the person sitting next to you. It does get prerequisitely louder during football games. Service is great. Check out the new menu before you go at www.rockbottom.com.

We have a classy McDonald's now!

There are signs that say "whoa" surrounding the McDonald's on Route 3. That's because it now has classy booths (think Chipotle), black, square tables and flat-screen TVs on the walls. There is also a Red Box in the parking lot you can use to rent DVDs for cheap. However, the food is not any better than it used to be. It is simply a cosmetic face lift. The food is not better than it used to be. The only thing I like is the fries, and even those only when I have PMS. You can't beat the price though.

    One-stop shopping

I love Kohl's. Ours is on Route 301 in the shopping center with Target. The prices are in between Target and a department store and they sell all kinds of things: clothing, housewares, shoes, even cards and Christmas ornaments. I swear, you could do all of your holiday shopping at their store or on their website. They even sell jewelry and beauty supplies. My only complaint is that the young adult clothes is very teeny-bopperish, so I have to shop in the old people section. Ah, forget it. I am old.

    Quality product, so-so service

The employees at this Victoria's Secret are kind of snobby, like you are interupting their day by wanting to be helped. Okay, not all of them are like that, but it is touch and go, and many get really pissed if you try to redeem the freebie coupons. Besides that, the Bowie Town Center store is pretty typical. It's clean and maintained and pretty easy to find things. VS bras are of excellent quality. A friend once described them as "like iron." They are around 25 to 50 dollars apiece, but they have several sales a year. I also like their beauty products.

    They're getting classier, and pricier!

I used to not like Bath and Body Works, since all of their products were sweet and fruity scented, but now they have branched out to higher-quality, more sophisticated products. Now, the problem is that they're getting more expensive. The best time to shop there is right after a holiday, when all of the themed stuff goes on clearance. They also send pretty good coupons in the mail, so be sure to give them your address. The employees at the Bowie Town Center location seem nice enough, and I have always gotten helped right away when I was there.

    The store for college students

I go to Target all the time, especially the one off of 301 in Bowie. There pharmacy has the best prices, and they have good deals on beauty products and clothes. Also, the store is bright and clean. Most of the employees are nice and helpful, but I'm not too fond of the workers in the women's clothing section. They seem put out at the thought of helping you. I love their selection of greeting cards as well. Definitely worth the trip.
