Solid Seafood; Great Fish Stew; Pedestrian sides and hushpuppies

This is a nice, unassuming restaurant on ""Restaurant Row"" on the north side of Myrtle Beach. We showed up around 8:45 PM on an off-season Monday night, so the place was shutting down. Nonetheless, the greeters & servers were friendly, helpful, and didn't rush us. I had grilled sea scallops, which were fantastic, and a crab cake, which looked like it was straight from the freezer, but was a pleasant surprise as it was moist, tangy and chock full o crab! My wife had the frilled salmon special, which was a tad bland. With the entrees came a small cup of fish stew, a thick tomato-based stew which was a highlight -- next time, we'll both be ordering that on its own. Also there was a standard iceberg salad & baked potato. Finally, they served a bread basket with divine cinnamon buns, and given the build-up (touted as the best I would ever have), thick and disappointing hush puppies. So the bottom line: A nice, solid, friendly restaurant with some ups and some downs. We'll go back!

Go when someone else is paying

I've been to the Orangery at least 10 times, but only when I'm on expense account. This may sound cavalier, but I believe it's one of two ways to enjoy it. The other is if they are hosting a fixed price wine dinner. The food is stupendous, but the portions are, shall I say, petite. The atmosphere is a bit stuffy. The wine, of course, is brutally expensive. So if you have deeeeeep pockets, or an expense account, live it up and enjoy. Otherwise, you're going take a bite of a scallop and think - that bite was $10.00. I could have had 4 barbecue sandwiches from Buddies.....

    Best overall in Knoxville

I love this golf course -- challenging, interesting holes, beautiful views, well-maintained, laid back, and a great value. River Islands is a nicer course, but more expensive. Three Ridges just blows all the others away.

Experience the Terror of the Deserted Courtyard!

Oh my. I stayed here because it was cheap and a brand name. The only reasons that I didn't leave were that it was after midnight when my plane landed, so I would have had to find accomodations after 1:00 AM, and I figured it would be a badge of courage to survive the night. It's extremely hard to find, which is a detraction. However, the place consists of two desolate courtyards, which empty onto what appears to be a rather rough street. My courtyard - the back one - boasted no other tenants save two with wrecked cars. The vending machine was enmeshed with iron to prevent vandalism. The room was horrible; the heater barely worked and was incredibly loud. Enough said. Stay somewhere nicer.

I love the Henlopen, but it's a bit far away.

I grew up with friends who had a condo here, and I've stayed here twice in the last five years. I love the Henlopen -- nothing fancy, but nothing out of place either. The proprieters have always been super-nice and accomodating, letting me park and change even if I show up at 9:00 AM. It's also great being right on the boardwalk, and situated on a non-crowded part of the beach. The only downside is that it is a sizable walk to Dolle's, Funland, and the center of action on Rehoboth Ave. So, unfortunately, I've moved my yearly vacation to the Admiral. But if you don't care about the walk, you can't beat the Henlopen!

    Best Indian Food In Knoxville

Sitar delivers consistently good Indian food in a convenient West Knoxville location. Like Kashmir, its buffet is of lower quality than the food on the menu, but it's still good. It's not the best Indian food in the world (or even in Tennessee -- try Maurya in Brentwood), but it is the best in Knoxville, and worth the drive.

    Good Thai Food in Maryville

The building looks like a dump, but inside, it's far from it. The staff is pleasant, and the menu is a good mix of Thai and random Asian (including sushi). The food is excellent, and everyone in town whom I know who has been there, returns regularly. As a Maryvillian who likes different cuisines, I celebrate the existance of Lemon Grass, and am always happy to see so many customers there.

    Best Price/Performance Ratio

Buddys is Knoxville's chain, and our city could certainly do worse. Reliable barbecue at a good price. In fact, Buddy's is usually my unit of food enjoyment. $15 for a steak? Hmmmm. Is that really worth 6 Buddy's Barbecues? I doubt it.....
