G'Raj Mahal Cafe
91 Red River St, Austin, TX 78701
G'Raj Mahal is one of the many trailers that have popped up in Austin over the past few years. However, this one is a bit more special. Not only do they serve wonderful Indian food and have a Tandoori oven in their trailer, they also have a pretty, covered dining space. So, unlike most trailers in town, there is plenty of seating, ceiling fans for when it is hot and outdoor heaters for when it is cold.\r
While it's a bit tucked away in the neighborhood, you can't miss the place because of the large art bikes that dominate the space. This coupled with the breezy white curtains surrounding the dining area, makes for a fun, laid-back atmosphere. It just screams Austin.\r
The food is great. I've tried several different curries and have been pleased with all of them. The korma is exactly what you expect, tasty and delicious. My only complaint is the chicken is in pieces that are a bit too big to eat with the plastic silverware provided. The lamb, though, is cooked to perfection and tasty! The naan is one of my favorites. I prefer the garlic naan to the other varieties as we ordered the paneer naan one night and I couldn't really taste much paneer in it. I also highly recommend their mango lassi for a refreshing beverage. Otherwise, bring your own beer/wine as they are a BYOB establishment.\r
If you come during the dinner rush, be prepared to wait for tables and food. We have had success going early, but with the amount of customers both eating there and getting food to go, you may have to wait a bit for the food. It is worth it.\r
Of course, like most Indian food, it's a bit pricier than what you would consider paying for trailer food. However, I have always felt we got our money's worth and am in complete love with this place.
