Despite the not so hot decor, this place is the place to try if you're thinking of becoming a vegetarian or love interesting vegetarian dishes. I first discovered seitan at Candle's and am totally hooked on it. Their specials are usually the best dishes and change quite frequently but are a little on the steep side. I've also been to Candle's 79, their upscale version. Really upscale...over priced...wouldn't go there again when I can get it cheaper at the Cafe.
212 Restaurant and Bar
133 E 65th St, New York, NY 10065
I've been to 212 twice. Once on a date and once with my bf. The lobster salad pictured on this site is sooo expensive. I got the appetizer portion which is like the size of my pinky and it cost me over $20!! And when i tried to ask him how much it was he just said..oh I don't know and hesitatingly said I could check but didn't do it. The service is HORRIFIC! Our waiter was so pretentious and busy talking to the trendy French party next to us that he didn't even look at us twice, ask how our meal was, whether we wanted anything. NOTHING at all.
Do not waste your time here.
Merchants NY Cigar Bar
1125 1st Ave, New York, NY 10065
I've been to this place twice, once for dinner (had the recommended scallops which were so spectacular and a really tiny portion), and once for dessert (had the apple crumb cake pie and wine at the cigar bar downstairs, very delicious but was lukewarm in the middle). Honestly this place is me and my bf's little kept secret for a romantic late night rendezvous. There are small hidden rooms downstairs and during the weekdays, there's hardly anyone there, you can cuddle up with your Boo in one of the dark rooms and have dessert and wine under candlelight. The service downstairs is great.
Recommendation: skip dinner and head straight for the cigar bar.
