Dental Examination
Visual oral examination by itself (even by a dentist), will not reliably detect Periodontal Disease until it has reached an advanced stage.
X-rays
Early detection and adequate diagnosis require measurement of pockets (the crevice between the tooth, gums and bone) with a periodontal probe and dental x-rays.

Teeth Cleaning
Gold fillings or restorations are still the standard against which all other dental materials are measured. Because of its superior biocompatible and physical properties, I'm sure it will continue to be so for many years. Gold inlays and onlays have potential to support and nurture your tooth for the long term. I knew a really nice lady who lived to be 103 and who enjoyed her gold fillings for over 60 years! I saw her for her cleanings and exams for 15 of those years and never had to fix any of her gold fillings. It's no wonder that gold is the material of choice that most dentists prefer for their own dental fillings.

Your child's first visit to the dentist should be around age 18 months. In addition to regular exams and dental care as your child grows, proper nutrition, home care with fluoride and dental sealants have been shown to be almost 90% effective in preventing dental decay and disease. In addition, evaluation and guidance of growth and development in the early years can save your child years of suffering and embarrassment from malocclusion.

Fillings
For over a century, the dental amalgam fillings made of a mixture of silver, tin, mercury and copper have served us well. In certain cases it still has a place today. But now we have better materials and techniques to repair teeth that have been damaged by decay. Amalgam is used to fill the cavity where the decay has been removed. The problems with amalgam fillings are that they seriously weaken any tooth in which they are placed and, over time they leak and corrode causing sensitivity, cracked teeth and discoloration of both the filling and the tooth. I call amalgam filings "black" fillings, because they are only silver for a short time before corrosion causes them to turn "black". For many of us, this can be embarrassing when we open our mouths.
Resin Composite
In recent years, bonding has proven to be a highly effective treatment for closing spaces between the teeth. Composite resin, a plastic material, is applied to the teeth to make them wider in areas were gaps exist. Bonding can also be used to close a space temporarily, until crowns are made, for example. On the other hand, if you are having your spaces closed through orthodontics, even if some of your teeth are too dark, bonding can be used to lighten them while the spaces are being closed.
Gold Restorations
Today, gold restorations are mostly used in the back teeth, and are done with a conservative technique that can allow the gold restoration to blend in and not distract from your nice white smile at all.
Veneers
Porcelain veneers are very thin shells (laminates) of quality porcelain (sort of like false fingernails). After a minimum preparation (sort of like sanding), an impression of the teeth is taken and our lab technician makes the very thin and refined porcelain veneers.
Crowns
A crown is a restoration which can replace the entire top (crown) of a tooth. It is necessary when damage to a tooth removes too much internal structure to be able to restore it with an ordinary filling. The restoration must be done with a technique which will strengthen and hold the tooth together, stand up to greater force, and satisfy increased cosmetic demand.
Bridges
The process starts with a thorough review of the patient's medical and dental history, and a complete examination of the entire mouth and oral structures. The clinical examination Includes specific xrays, jaw models and digital photos, if necessary. (These are essentially the same records required for restorative bridges or partials.)
Dental Bonding
Cosmetic bonding and reshaping is capable of rejuvenating your smile by giving you a stronger and more youthful appearance. In most instances this can be done easily and quickly.

Root Canal Treatment
A Root Canal is an archaic, but common name for Endodontic Treatment of an infected tooth. Endo is a latin term for inside, so endodontic means treatment of the inside of the tooth.

Periodontal Surgery
Periodontal Disease is an ongoing infection in the pockets around the teeth. The deeper the pockets, the more infection you have and the more serious the infection. The purpose of Periodontal Treatment is to remove this infection and give these pockets a chance to heal.
Deep Cleaning
The treatment involved depends on the level of infection. Scaling and Root Planning procedures are used to treat Upper Level Infection involving the gum area. If your infection has gotten into the bone, which supports your teeth, and is below the level that can be reached with specialized instruments, then a minor surgical procedure (OSSEOUS TREATMENT) must be done to pull back the gum and remove the lower level of infectious material.

Dentures
Dentures are part of the art and science of dentistry known as Prosthodontics. Prosthodontics are appliances which serve to replace broken or missing teeth.
Overdentures
An overdenture is a denture made to be stabilized by fitting over a small number of prepared teeth or implants. They are more expensive due to the precision nature of construction, but for many who are unable to wear a denture, the clip-on stability of an overdenture is a blessing!

Dental Implants
Instead of screws joining the implant to the abutment, a locking taper joins the Bicon implant to the Bicon abutment. The locking taper or friction is a well known engineering principle that is used in orthopedic hip replacements; dentists use it each day with their dental lathes. The metal to metal contact means that there is no rotation and no bacterial leakage once the abutment is properly tapped into the implant. No rotation means that the design and execution of treatment plans are simpler and more predictable; it is not necessary to splint the implant to natural teeth or to other implants in order to gain stability.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral Surgery
Oral surgery involves removal of impacted wisdom teeth. Anyone who is in danger of developing impacted wisdom teeth (third molars that only partially erupt or get trapped or stuck in the jaw) should have them removed so that they do not damage adjacent molars and cause other oral problems. In addition, anyone who is getting dentures should have their wisdom teeth removed.
Gum Surgery
The third stage is called Moderate Periodontitis and is the point where the patient might notice bad breath, tooth sensitivity, headaches, gum recession, exposed roots, and loose teeth. Bone loss around the teeth averages about 6 to 7 millimeters. Moderate Periodontitis is probably misnamed, because it is severe and requires diligent effort to control. In addition to effective home care and non surgical care through your dental hygienist, very often gum surgery is required. In many cases the teeth that are loose have to be splinted together to save them. You will then need aggressive regular periodontal health maintenance care in addition to your regular checkups. We will probably need to see you every 2 to 3 months if you want to save your teeth and oral structures in comfort.

Oral and maxillofacial surgery is the branch of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of defects, injuries, and diseases involving the head, mouth, teeth, gums, jaws, and neck.

Braces
Braces are the most common type of orthodontic treatment. Treatment involves impressions of your teeth being made before braces can be put on. A gummy paste is placed in the mouth to get an impression of the teeth and gums. From these impressions, models of the teeth are made.

Teeth Whitening
Tooth bleaching involves the placement of a gel solution on the teeth to eliminate stains and discoloration. The solution is held in place by a custom made, see-through tray that fits over the teeth. It is a safe, easy way to whiten teeth. Today, bleaching is probably cosmetic dentistry's most common procedure...everybody's doing it!
