One star is being generous. The place is filthy. The calamari I ordered was fried in old oil. It was disgusting. Why did I attempted to eat the food even though the place was disgusting, some hole in the wall place may turn out good food. This place does not. I will never go back.
I work in the cleaning business. I know my dust. I would say the dust and filth in the front bar has not had a bath in 20 years. The ceiling I am sure still has the old smoke from the old days. The oyster shooters are just fine. You do know that they just come out of a jar. The back bar is the place to be. I don't know how the neighbors take it though.
We live in the neighborhood and wanted to stop in for a dinner on the way to a movie. When we arrived on a Sunday night at 6:30, the place was already full of fairly drunk regulars. Server was always ""overwhelmed."" They were ""out"" of bread (but managed to make us garlic bread, though we had to pay for it) and the place smelled like someone's basement rec room. While the food was tasty, I ended up with a stomach ache for a day after eating there...coincidence? Oh, and the bill (with tip) for 3 drinks, two dinners and a dozen oysters was north of $100. Fine in a beautiful setting with great service. Outrageous in a dive bar where the server spent about 15 minutes trying to convince a man he was too drunk to drive...after which he was served alcohol again. Never going back!
We lived across the street from the Oyster House Saloon for many decades. What a place,,, -it once was.\r <br>Now the service is ignoring at best. \r <br>The bartenders and waitresses don't care at all. And they are well aware that their service is lacking.\r <br>\r <br>The food is not the great fare of years gone by. Plain and tasteless, and you'll have to remind your waitress it's been sitting on the hot line for the past 30 minutes waiting to be delivered to your table while she chats with her friends.\r <br>\r <br>Celibrities that used to frequent the place are long gone along with the unique atmosphere the Oyster House once had.\r <br>What a shame.\r <br>\r <br>The once attentive service, the tasty garlic bread that flowed,, the generous drinks, the savvy and fun servers,, are no more.\r <br>Oh,, those were the days!\r <br>The Oyster House used to be someplace else. Now spend your money someplace else.\r

I was NOT impressed! Weve been looking for a decent seafood restaurant in the East San Fernando Valley and, after driving by this place for years, we decided to visit tonight.\r <br>\r <br>\r <br>We arrived at 5PM on Sunday for Dinner and requested seating on the patio. We sat down at one of the large tables (away from the cigarette smoke) and waited and waited and waited even though the bartender saw us come in and sent us back to the patio. Finally, the barmaid, or whatever they're called now, came over and asked us for our drink order. We asked her to clean the tables which were FILTHY. You would have thought that we asked her to tear her own arm out. She was pretty rude the next couple of times she came to our table.\r <br>\r <br>\r <br>Our waitress finally came over about 10 minutes after we first arrived and we were still waiting for our drinks. She took our food order and left and returned with the drinks. The three iced teas were in 12oz beer glasses completely full of ice cubes so there was just a small amount of tea. I finished it fairly quickly and asked for a refill. I was told that they were out and that they were brewing a fresh urn. Fifteen minutes later I asked how the brewing was going and she came back to tell me that they were just starting it.\r <br>\r <br>The food was so-so. Rare blackened ahi tuna came out virtually raw with no blackening but the spices, the steamed vegetables amounted to 5 baby carrots, 2 small broccoli florets and two quarter slices of zucchini, the garlic potatoes were just mashed potatoes with a couple of slices of garlic on top. My daughter's medium blackened ahi tuna came cooked properly but wasn't very good. My wife's chicken marsala was good as was my son-in-law's pasta checha.\r <br>\r <br>\r <br>Our waitress made some snippy comment when my wife asked for more water, since the tea was never coming. So, both of the wait staff had attitude issues. I guess the regulars don't mind. I can't see any reason to ever go back.
What a great seafood joint this place is. In the middle of nowhere Moorpark and Whitsett, but has great rustic scenery. The place doesn't look it has changed for the past 30 years, but it still gets the job done. I strictly came here for the oyster shooter happy hour. Good, cheap eats and fast and friendly service. It was pretty packed even for a thursday evening. You gotta check out this place at least once... Next stop.. McCormick and Schmick's!
We walked in on a Satuday night with no idea of what the place was like. I felt like I walked into a bar in the midwest somewhere. No tables, all bar tables, at least in the front area, there are tables in the back patio area. Still, we were seated promptly and a waitress with scary sounding rasp took very good care of us. Food was really good, simple and small menu but the pasta with the shirmp and cognac sauce was amazing. Also we had oysters parmesian which I've never had before but defintiely want again. Around 9:00 a singer came on and took requests and people were dancing in the aisles. Bizarre scene but fun and good food. Only complaint, too heavy on the garlic on some dishes.
Truly a step back in time to what the SF Valley is all about. If you're one of the people who enjoys valley hot spots like Senor Fred's, Cafe Cordial, or that crappy sushi bar on coldwater/ventura, then this is NOT the place for you. The Oyster House is a step into the valley's rich past. The decor, the gentry, and the vibe is old school. A time warp in the era of the valley before it knew the yuppies, and homes were closer to 100k. Upon parking in the back lot, you enter into an outdoor bar/shack on your left. To your right reads a sign ""No Tanktops after 5pm"" - if you don't get that joke, get back in your car. The waitress who sat us had only a rasp left for a voice, and we sat in classic bar stools with the formica covered (fake walnut) dining table. The waitress quickly brought the miller lights, along with delicious 75 cent oyster shooters. Within minutes the owner Herb from Miami befriended us, and told us of his history of over 35 years from it's inception. The food was good, had the Salmon, the wife had the Halibut. They don't rush you, and make you feel like part of the crowd who seem to have been patrons for years. A woman who sat down close to us, said she was taking her parents out for their anniversary, and the palm restaurant would not be an acceptable alternative. Bottom line, if you're looking for a slice of the valley of the past.. you know the one without the meat market, snooty attitude, then the Oyster House might just be the last restaurant in the valley to go. I have been coming to the Oyster House Saloon for many years. They have the best Seafood I have ever tasted... The bartenders are some of the best... Many celebrities come there because of its small close-nit sitting and the wonderful people that go there. I would highly recommend this establishment to anyone who wants the best food and drink in the valley. The prices are expectional, can't beat this place.....
