Swimmers ear usually occurs in children or young adults who have been exposed to water. Oftentimes, if a child goes swimming and water is trapped in the ear bacteria usually mixed with the water in the ear canal and usually form a localized infection in the skin of the ear canal. This can be quite painful and lead to ear pain, ear swelling, ear drainage, and hearing loss. Oftentimes, a specialist needs to vacuum out the ear and usually place a wick in the ear canal so that the patient can have immediate relief from the pain and swelling. Oral antibiotics have no place in the treatment of an external ear infection. 99% of all external ear infections respond to the placement of topical antibiotic eardrops on an ear wick. For 25 years, the specialists at the Pediatric Ear, Nose, & Throat Clinic have been taking care of children with swimmers ear.
