I used to live in Springfield, and my parents still live there. I live in Indianapolis now, but anytime my boyfriend and I go visit we always have to go to Maria's. We were just there a few weeks ago and didn't have time to go, but we had my parents get us some to-go food to take back home with us. This is how good Maria's is. To begin with, their housemade salsa is delicious. They also have a hotter version you can ask for, which my boyfriend, my father and I love. Their queso is also very good. The Sergio is my absolute favorite dish. It's a shredded beef chimichanga, which is stuffed with shredded beef and cheese, deep fried, and then smothered with queso. It is so delicious I get it almost every time, even though they have tons of other great options. One tip I have is that you can get pretty much anything ala carte if you ask. I always do this with the sergio because it's so filling I don't need rice and beans. Another great option is their 'should be famous' fried tacos. That's right, deep-fried tacos. You can get them with a variety of ingredients, from shredded chicken to seafood. I don't like seafood, but my mom and my boyfriend love these. My mom has a friend who has to come to Maria's anytime she comes to visit, specifically for the fried tacos. The fillings are great, and the crispy fried tortilla practically melts in your mouth. Yum. They also have a wide selection of Tequilas, margaritas, and beers. All in all, a wonderful experience in the heart of downtown Springfield.
Cesar's Old Mexico restaurant is a new entity on E. Sunshine St, We stopped in to check it out and OMG was it good. Through a mixup in communication, I thought I was ordering beef enchiladas, while our server thought I was ordering a carne asada with red sauce. When it came I was surprised, but it smelled so good, I decided to give it a go. It was GREAT! One of the best Mexican meals I've ever had. My wife had a tamale and chicken enchiladas with mole. She said it was the best Mexican meal she could remember. Needless to say, Cesar's Old Mexico is now our favorite Mexican restaurant in Springfield. BTW, one thing you should know is that it is authentic Mexican, not Tex-Mex. Also, about half of the patrons eating there are Spanish speakers. I'm predicting Cesar's Old Mexico will have to move to bigger quarters before long.
We couldn't be more pleased! My wife and I were here for the first time (while on our honeymoon). The staff provided excellent service and were very attentive to our needs. I had the fajitas taco salad (with steak) & my wife ordered the Steak Mexicana (with 3 fajita wraps,T-bone steak, rice, refried beans, sauteed peppers and onions, guacamole, and sour cream). Both meals were excellent! The steak from each meal was done perfectly - tender and juicy. The prices were very reasonable. I endorse few restaurants, but whole heartedly recommend Puente Mexican Restaurant at 1111 E.Republic Road in Springfield,MO.
