Ovarian Cancer
Dorothy's cancer experience began when was out shopping one day and experienced an unusual pain in her shoulder and back. After meeting with her doctor, she discovered that she had suffered a mild heart attack. Her physician performed a thorough exam and discovered another malady: Dorothy had a baseball-sized tumor in her abdomen which was later diagnosed as Stage 3 Ovarian Cancer. Before the tumor could be addressed, she underwent a double bypass surgery to ensure that she was healthy enough to endure cancer treatment.
Cervical Cancer
Brachytherapy is standard therapy for certain types of cervical cancer, vaginal cancer and uterine cancer. Working together with your gynecologic oncologist, our radiation oncologists serve as a regional referral center for standard treatment and challenging and difficult cases.

Lung Cancer
Nourish your body with food, not supplements. AICR does not support use of supplements as an effective strategy to reduce cancer risk. Some studies have linked high-dose supplements with negative outcomes, such as smokers who take high dose B-carotene may be at increased risk for lung cancer. Bottom line: nutrients should be obtained through food, not supplements.

Thyroid Cancer
Radioactive pharmaceuticals are unsealed radiation sources usually given in a liquid or pill form to treat some types of cancer. Examples include Iodine 131 to treat thyroid cancer, Samarium 153 (Quadramet) to treat cancer that has spread to the bone (bone metastases), and Zevalin (ibritumomab tiuxetan) used to treat certain lymphomas.

Ultrasound
In three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy, your radiation oncologist uses imaging technologies, such as PET/CT, CT or ultrasound, to create 3-D pictures of the tumor so that the radiation beams can be formed to fit the size and shape of your tumor. Usually the treatment is delivered through several different angles.

To combat her cancer, Dorothy was scheduled for surgery to remove both of her ovaries and a portion of the intestine. The operation was a success, but she was told that she would have to have chemotherapy to eliminate unseen cancer cells in her body. Now, after several years of working together to battle Dorothy’s cancer, the two have formed a great friendship. "I have never met a doctor that was more caring, considerate, and willing to listen,” Dorothy said, “You’re never on a timetable with her."

Minimally Invasive Surgery
Using the da Vinci® Surgical System, surgeons maneuver an advanced set of instruments to perform robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery. During this procedure, the surgeon makes a few tiny incisions to insert small instruments and a high-definition camera inside the patient. The camera allows the surgeon to view a highly magnified, 3-D image of the surgical site. The surgeon, seated at an ergonomically designed console, uses controls to move the instrument arms and camera. The da Vinci® Surgical System translates, in real time, the surgeon’s hand, wrist and finger actions into precise movements of the instruments inside the patient. Throughout a da Vinci robotic surgery procedure, the surgeon controls every surgical maneuver. The system cannot act in any way without the surgeon’s input.
Robotic Surgery
Robotic surgery is a type of surgical procedure that is done using robotic systems. The term “robotic” often misleads people. Robots don’t perform surgery. Very small tools and a camera are attached to a robotic arm, which is then maneuvered by a surgeon by way of a computer console. Cancer Care Northwest is proud to use the da Vinci® Surgical System for all robotic-assisted surgical procedures.
Hysterectomy
Melody Coombs first heard of PMP—short for Pseudomyxoma Peritonei—in November 2004 when she was diagnosed with the disease after a hysterectomy follow-up. PMP is a rare type of abdominal tumor that spreads through the abdominal lining or peritoneum that often begins as a burst tumor of the appendix. “The physician told us to go to Dr. Ryan Holbrook, right here in Spokane. As Doctor Holbrook was out of town, I sought a second opinion at the Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle,” said Melody. The recommendation there was exactly the same: return to Spokane to see Dr. Holbrook who is nationally and internationally recognized for his treatment of PMP.
Laparoscopy
Cancer Care Northwest remains on the forefront of cancer treatment, offering the most advanced treatment options to patients throughout the Inland Northwest. Dr. Maryam Parviz has been performing robotic-assisted surgery since 2014 using the da Vinci® Xi Surgical System. The Xi system is one of the more advanced robotic systems in use to allow for greater visualization and precise dissection in complex surgical procedures. Robotic-assisted surgery has been demonstrated to be a safe and effective minimally invasive technique for complex oncologic surgeries. It is being used more and more frequently as an alternative option to both conventional open surgery and laparoscopy.
