We have been eating at Frank's for about twenty five years now. In the past, the lines would be out the door, you would have to give your name and wait for a table. All those days are gone now and it is obvious why. Frank's was always known for LARGE portions and great home made soup. The owner is now cutting corners so, that the soup is plain water, only luke warm, and the large portions of Chicken Parm that Frank's was known for, have now shrunk to almost half the size they were. When we went we always lately had to bring along some chicken bullion to add to our soup. Sandwiches are also not a good choice since the meat is rationed out and an Italian Hoagie that used to be great, now only has one slice of each lunch meat, making it a bread sandwich. A tossed salad is also rationed out to one piece of tomato, one thin slice of cucumber, etc. The owner makes the waitresses take the tossed salad into the kitchen to ask the cook for a slice of tomato to make sure they don't give out more than one. If you plan on using the coupons that the owner puts in the Northeast times or on his own website for Frank's, you must pay with cash only since he does not want to pay the credit card company's fee. Also you must have the coupon from the website printed out or he won't accept it from your phone. Yes, that is how bad it has become at Franks. It is a shame since it was always a nice place to eat. The help is always upset since the owner is constantly hounding them in front of the customers. I feel sorry for them. The owner is not Italian, he is Greek. Don't waste your money or time going to Franks. The prices are very high considering the quality and portions. The owner is not taking the interest that he once did, and cutting corners is certainly not the way to go.
We decided to try the Ashburner out for dinner because the menu looked great. So many choices led the 2 of us to pick 1 appetizer and 2 entres, all to share. First - quesadillas. Amazing. They had the perfect proportion of cheese to meat/tortilla, contained corn and were speckled with the tiniest bits of peppers, which gave the perfect amount of oomph without being overpowering. Second - White pizza with spinach and tomatoes. The tomatoes were a great sized chunk and despite loving garlic, I used non because this pizza had its own unique almost buttery richness. Third - Bacon cheeseburger - cheddar and medium well. The perfect burger! Came with a few delicious fries, was cooked exactly how we ordered and let me tell you about the bacon. I rarely eat it and when I do, its usually a fake piece with a burger. This bacon was so flavorful, I almost ordered a side. Next day - we had enough leftovers to each enjoy the pizza and a small slice of quesadilla, which we looked forward to all morning. Very very impressed. Also, the bill came to $26 (we didn't drink but they did have a fabulous martini offering) and the restaurant itself was nice inside. Will be back for sure!
While in Philadelphia on a business trip my husband and I went into Porcini's Restaurant. The food, service and hospitality of the staff and owners is absolutely amazing! Everything was perfectly cooked and flavored for a truly mouth watering experience! I have never wanted a meal to last forever as much as I did this one. We both found ourselves savoring the taste long after the food passed through our mouths. The owners (two brothers) make you feel like family, taking the time out of the kitchen to visit with you and have real conversations. The personability of the staff and owners, taste of the food and reasonable prices makes this a restaurant one we would make a special trip to Philadelphia for! This food made me remember what good home made Italian cooking really is! No more chain Italian restaurants for us! It is obvious why it made Zagat's 2008 Top Italian Restaurant list! If you are looking for an amazing restaurant with incredible home made food, reasonable prices, personality and old time friendliness - visit Porcini's in Philadelphia - it is in a class all its own!
