This place used to offer anything on the breakfast/brunch menu, if you came on Saturday or Sunday before 10AM, for $7.95! Ah, those were the days! And the food they offered for brunch was some of the most inventive in town. Now, you pay full price anytime all the time, but the food is still better than most breakfast joints. Their homemade granolas are incredible. I have it topped with fresh fruit and vanilla yoghurt. The fruit is always well selected and very fresh. They make about six different benedict dishes that all have the potential to make this place legendary. The ingredients are always fresh as can be and the hollandaise needs just a bit more lemon to make it perfect. However (and this is a BIG however), they really have an overall problem with plating. It effects everything they serve but it almost ruins the benedicts. I know hollandaise is a delicate suace that can't get too hot, but how you deal with that is too make sure you pull all the ingredients together quickly. Pull the eggs out of the poaching trays, get 'em atop those slabs of Canadian bacon and pour the sauce on and GET IT TO THE TABLE. The eggs should help warm the sauce a bit in this scenario, but it seems they are always putting luke warm sauce on top of eggs that have gotten cold. The dish comes to you tepid and makes you think it has been sitting around. Not too appetizing. Sad, as I know from the flavors they have a potentially great benedict. Too many other inventive and mighty tasty dishes to mention but I can say the pancakes are quite delicious! All portions are very generous and the prices, even though not as low as days of yore, are still really fair.

The only way to get real authentic and delicious pupusas, is to have a freind or family member whose origins are from el salvador.....the process they go through once a year to make the tamales ( nothing like mexican tamales ) and pupusas, is painstaking and time consuming....as many el salvadorians restaurants as there are in los angeles, few if any, make them the way they're made in the homes of those whose tradition it is, to go through this social event....having said that....the pupusas are fairly good here....like many latin restaurants, they tend to cook everything OVER-WELL.... the puree beens are good......the service is fair to good here ...but they dont let you switch much on the menu....the place is clean and now they've added a bar... 4 is probably a bit too high, I actually say 3-1/2 is closer to right...
If you have not had tacos here, you have not had the best tacos in town. For years the price was only $1 per taco and have just recently gone up to a buck and a quarter, which is okay. The meat is amazing, the tacos are made with the regluar size tortillas, not the small ones. They are open all the time it seems. I have been coming here to this little place for over 17 years. I live in La Habra now and when I want some really good mexican food (all the food is amazing) I drive to my hometown of ELA and sit in this little hole in the wall restaurant and eat for a very cheap price. The last few times I've been to Culver City to try restaurants I've really enjoyed it. Waterloo & City is no exception. Although W&C can be described as a gastro pub, I think it is a little more upscale than your average gastro pub with a wide variety of food. There are about 20 beers on tap which offers a nice range of options. Food choices range from pizza to scallops to chicken pot pie to shepherds pie. W&C has inexpensive valet parking and plenty of seating include a more mellow back room. The bar scene is pretty hopping as well. All and all a great option.
Decided I had to go to this restaurant after seeing it in The Fast and the Furious the other day. It is a great spot for sangria and tapas. Perfect for a warm summer evening as it is a kind of indoor/outdoor place. It is full of eclectic decor and the food was super yummy. I particularly like the jerk chicken. The banana boats weren't exactly what I thought they would look like, but were flavourful and nicely presented. The wait staff keeps your glass full - constantly re-filling the sangria - which wasn't all bad. I will be back again.
I'm hesitant to post this review lest other people catch on to this apparent secret - brunch at Malo. You can walk in at any time and score a table on the half full patio. It is fully shaded so comfortable on all but the hottest days. Be careful that oyu don't fill up on the fresh chips and homemade salsa because you want to save room for the carnitas and corn pancakes. Seriously, a corn pancake short stack with carnitas layered between topped with a gooey poached egg. That just happened.
Most people hit Fairfax for Ethiopian food not knowing the best food in the city is a half mile away here at Awash. The place scares people from the street. Barred up windows and metal security door. Drawn curtains. Be brave people. Open the door and enjoy. Always get the veggie platter and rotate their proteins. Awaze Tibbs, Kifto Special. Ran into Jermaine Jackson here, but I don't know if that's a selling point. Service is slow, but whatever.
I give this place one star off because it's a little on the pricey side for what amounts to Mexican food. However, love their Coke carnitas and dill pickle/ground beef hardshell tacos. (Greasy, but oh-so good... I make my own tacos at home now with dill pickles because they got me hooked!) Nice patio on hot summer nights to chill on with a margarita or cerveza. Family-friendly, and they have surprisingly awesome brunch.
Hilariously decorated like Grandmas house and just as warm and cozy. The food is absolutely tasty and extremely generous servings are laid out in odd serving dishes that make you feel at home.
