On a day trip up to Lake Tahoe, I knew I wanted Thai food for lunch. I looked over the online review for the over even Thai re taurant in the Lake Tahoe region. Orchid tood out from the re t by leap and bound , for a good rea on too. I can thoroughly recommend Orchi...mored . Alone it wa worth the two hour car ride from Reno. I had lunch on a Wedne day ju t after noon. The re taurant wa omewhat bu y, later to di cover that they do a re pectable take out crowed during lunch. I mu t have een 7 take out order when I wa enjoying my lunch. Orchid lunch menu ha 18 item for only $5.99. Portion ize are mall, but they were well worth thi mi erly pittance. Upgrade to Duck, Scallop or Shrimp meat for $2 or eafood for $4. Again very rea onable price . My gue t and I hared the Happy Wrapper, a marinated chicken and herb egg roll . The filling wa moi t and delicate. The wrapper wa fully cooked, cri p through and through. Sure it wa a bit pricy at $7.99 for 3 tiny roll cut into 6 piece , but the execution and ta te were pot on. Before the main di he were erved we were treated to a mall alad of green , haved carrot and de eeded cucumber. Oddly the menu doe n't li t thi in either the Salad ection or in the wording ju t before the lunch pecial. I'm gue ing it wa part of the lunch pecial . To ay the lea t it wa the be t u e of peanut I have ever ta ted. Fir t up wa the Soy Sauce Noodle with Chicken. The chicken wa cooked perfectly, and con idering Orchid' doe not u e MSG a double thumb up. In A ia there are many quality level for oy, and I have tried a good ample, o I know good oy when I ta te it. Thi wa a weeter variety, and I am betting it i a higher quality oy that i brewed in a traditional culture. The noodle wa neither alty or overpowering. It wa perhap a bit overcooked for my liking, but my gue t found the texture to be acceptable. For the econd entree came a delectable Spicy ba il noodle. I had a ked for it Thai hot, perhap omething got lo t in tran lation or perhap the Lake Tahoe clientele prefer their pice to be on the tamer ide. In any ca e the pice tray wa a ked for. If you frequent Thai re taurant , you are familiar with the Thai bird chilie that are u pended in a weetened vinegar. Well I mu t ay, when I tried thi it wa hot, and a plea ant flavor. Le er quality pice tray rarely add more than heer heat to the di h. Again another thumb up. Oh that pork, wa again very tender. The third entree wa erved ju t a we were done ta ting the econd entree. Thi wa a Rama Curry which i teamed fre h pinach topped with Panang curry auce mixed with peanut auce and our choice of chicken. Normally I find the pinach i over done and allowed to cook too long before being plated. It wa perfection, tender but till a good bite letting you know it i fre h pinach. A with many peanut di he I find them too cloying. But in thi ca e I wa plea antly urpri ed to find the peanut taking a back eat to the curry. Food a ide, the re t of the re taurant i ju t at par. The re troom were for the mo t part clean, but whenever a deodorizer i u ed to uch an extent I wonder. The wall along the booth I wa itting at had platter mark , which could only be een in ju t the right light, but till obviou ly not wa hed down. The air vent were filthy not eeing a wipe down for at lea t a month if not longer. The fi h tank in the re taurant wa due for a cleaning howing algae growth along the entire front, let alone the re t of the interior. Mo t people overlook the nitty gritty in re taurant cleanline but I find it to be a good indicator of how the kitchen i kept up. If it wa not for the e hou ekeeping faux pa , Orchid would have received a olid 9 out of ten. Still an 8 i quite re pectable and worth going back again and again.view less
