Oh my god, I had the best experience here. I have short hair that I want to grow out and have been daunted by the idea of months of awkward in-between-lengths and fluffy/puffy hair. ugh. I had a terrible experience at another salon in Ballard, and was tempted to give up and keep my hair short. After calling to make an appointment at Vain, however, I reconsidered. First off, the receptionist asked me about my hair and long term hair goals before she even suggested a stylist - she then suggested several options and settled on Rachel. Consequently, I went in for my appointment with the utmost confidence that I was getting the right stylist for the job. And I was! Rachel spent time talking to me about what was going on with my hair, what I wanted it to look like in the future etc. Then she explained her idea of the best ""plan of attack"" and long term stages of cutting to get to my goal length. She went about de-fluffing my disaster of a hairstyle with precision and attention to detail.
I was so relieved after she had finished with my cut - I looked like a normal person (a normal person with really chic, cool hair!) instead of a walking tree. The price tag was higher than what I have paid for haircuts in the past, but was totally worth it for the experience of the stylist. The actual salon was very comfortable, hip and fun. I love the location, the building, the boutique stuff and the atmosphere overall. I have the highest confidence in the Vain staff, and will be a loyal customer from now on!

I should start this by saying I have had many haircuts all over the country ranging in price from $20-$180 if not more. I have seen stylists everywhere from NYC to LA and had cuts from waist length to a boy cut with my thick curly hair. I also lived with a hairdresser for a few years and she gave me some great cuts, but I have to admit Alexis wins. I had my hair cut a bit over a month ago by her, (I didn?t write a review right away b/c the real test of a cut is how it grows out) and I love it just as much now as the day she cut and styled it. Even though she gave me bangs (something I have wanted for a while) I can spent 2 mins on it and it looks great or do some great funky things for going out at night. I think this haircut represents me better than any cut I?ve had. I think I tipped her the price of the cut b/c I couldn?t believe how cheap it was to get a style I was so happy with and I don?t regret it yet.

I had a great experience at Vain in Ballard. The location is really cute on the corner and not hard to find. My wait was less than 5 minutes and I didn't mind at all because I was looking at all the items they had for sale (jewelry, scarves etc). I was greeted by Melissa with a handshake and a friendly hello, and asked if I needed anything to drink - always a nice touch. I felt Melissa was really honest about the potential of my hair and cut I wanted and I really appreciated it. She was so meticulous and methodical while doing it. She didn't spend all her time being chatty which I love - she was focused on my hair! She kept up nice conversation but actually allowed me to relax too. In the end I came out with the best cut I have had in years (I don't remember having a better one)! Cheap too! I was actually kind of shocked by how cheap because she is great. I will definitely be going back to her for my next cut. Thanks Melissa!

I decided to be creative and try to lift a dark brow to a medium to light shade on my own. Needless to say, it didn't quite turn out as I would have liked. I immediately though of Vain, since a few years prior, I had the same lapse of judgment with very similar results. My favorite stylist moved on to NYC, and since then my hair had been boring and dark brown. Thankfully, I found Alexis' profile - and it seemed like a perfect match, she works with curly hair (mine is overtly so) and she does awesome color correction. My hair looks amazing- I haven't had so many compliments in quite some time and the best part is, she actually matched closed to my natural hair color, which is an odd medium ash brown color. The highlights and overall color are perfect. (no hint of red, which i had always had a hard time avoiding given some previous coloring) Seriously, Alexis is the woman to see if you want someone friendly that also delivers superb results. I don't usually write reviews, but I feel as though this experience mandates notifying the public.

I have had Melissa do my hair for years and its been a bit undecided where we would meet to have her cut my hair in the past as I met her while she was in beauty school three years ago, but she's at Vain now and I'm so happy for her. She has a sharp eye, precise and articulate skills, and I have never been unsatisfied with her work. She gives great cuts and they're incredibly affordable ($15 for men's, which is what I get) and her color skill is phenomenal. She is very friendly, very outgoing, laid-back, just a really great person and I recommend her to anyone. Vain in Ballard is in a nice location too, on the corner and with plenty of light coming in from floor-to-ceiling windows, unlike the Belltown location which is so dark. Anyhow, I say call and get Melissa as your stylist. She's awesome. Thank you for consistent work, Melissa!

Checkout VAIN in Ballard!! I spent my first year in Belltown trying to find a stylist I trusted with my short, curly hair. After trying just about every salon on 1st Ave I found my match! I have been trusting my ""look"" to Rachel for over 4 years now. She recently moved to the newest VAIN location in Ballard which has exceeded my expectations in look, feel and convenience. The great service and funky music make it a treat everytime I stop in to see Rachel.

My hair has been in Rachel's capable hands for six years, first at Vain's Belltown location and more recently in the new Ballard salon.
No matter what color schemes I have thrown at her - platinum blonde, ""regular"" color, bright multicolored configurations - Rachel has executed them with aplomb...and when I am out of ideas she is always full of them.
In addition to being an expert colorist, Rachel gives fantastic haircuts, every time. I have literally never been displeased.
The only time I was really upset was when Rachel was gone traveling for a few months and was unavailable to do my hair! (And, incidentally, the other Vain stylists that filled in to do my color/cut while she was gone were great too.)
I visited the new Ballard salon for the first time last week and it is wonderful. Very light with huge windows, cozy and comfortable, and small enough to feel ""personal"".
I would highly recommend Vain, and more specifically Rachel, to anyone.

Vain is a great unique salon with many talented artists...I say artist because they are creative and you will not leave there unsatisfied. My favorite person to go to is Roxana. She is fun to talk to and you will always leave there happy and still have some money left in your wallet. Once you go to her you will never go anywhere else : )
