Moist and Meaty Reuben that was perfect! No frills here...just a great sandwich!
I grew up in Seattle and have driven by this place for years, but it was never open at the time I passed by. That is until this past Saturday, as they are now open for sandwiches on the weekends. We stopped in as the curiousity over the years had built up and I needed to know if it was good. We parked, went in, and were greeted by the lone employee who was ready to serve.
The menu is limited to just a few sandwiches as the joint is USDA inspected so they can't have the other meats out on the weekend. No matter, we ordered the reuben and were able to watch as it was prepared. The sandwich is grilled and is served on a marbled rye with thousand island dressing as expected. Within a few minutes our sandwiches were delivered and they were beautiful. Mounds of corned beef piled with grilled kraut, severed with a pickle spear, potato salad, and a small cookie. Forget about the sides as they are just standard fare, as for the sandwich it was delicious! The meat was moist and tender with fantastic flavor. Ours had just the right amount of thousand island to combine with the juices from the kraut and meat to make this a pleasant mess of a sandwich. I am so pleased that I was finally able to get in and see what this place is all about and, when I am able, I will be coming back. I knew it had to have something going for it since it has been here for so many years.
As for the ambiance and dining area...do not expect this to be a fine dining establishment. This is a meat shop that make sandwiches on the side. At least that is how it appears to me. There are a few stools and window seats, but for the most part it looks like this place is geared up to sell the corned beef and pastrami that it prepares for restaurants and ""buy the pound"" for the public. In fact, part of the place even feels a bit dirty. Rest assured though, it is USDA inspected and it is still worth the stop for a sandwich to go if you get a chance.
