Sophia's deserves 5 stars but there are two reasons why it doesn't have it. First let me give you some background on my hair.....I am an African American female with jet black hair...very thick..and NO PERM! Please keep that in mind when reading this review. Sophia's is run by Danielle, it used to be run by her mother...Sophia...but she's recently retired. The shop is beautiful! For it to be in that area of West Philly...you wouldn't expect it to look like that which is great. If you want the whole beauty salon experience for a decent price...this is the place for you. The staff is very professional...the typical gossip salon image...NOT here. They do have a receiptionist who is very friendly and welcomes you when you walk in, and also offers you tea or coffee (if it's in the morning). My stylist at Sophia's is Danielle...who is wonderful. The only "problem" with Danielle is that EVERYONE loves her so expect to wait if you're not the 1st person at the shop when it opens. She can't help it though...she's just that good. There is another stylist there, Ebony...I've heard she's good as well but I personally have never gotten my hair done by her. I haven't come across ANYONE who can do my hair as well as Danielle does. Because my hair is so thick and she knows to use a straightening comb for my roots. YES PEOPLE...A STRAIGHTENING COMB. She also uses a Chi flat irons...which make me look like I have a perm I SWEAR! Danielle uses very good products as well on my hair which help it to grow. Now I'm second guessing posting this review because I don't want anyone to know about Sophia's!!! lol. Anyways, what prompted me to write this review was going to other salons (one I JUST came from in Harlem, Sho Nuff, review coming soon) and NOT being completely or nearly as satisfied as when Danielle does my hair. Like I said before...no one can do my hair like she can. The ONLY two reasons why Sophia's doesn't have 5 stars is because...1. Danielle charges $45 for a wash and curl...(not a big fan of the price, even though its worth it...I just wish I could get my hair done more often) and 2. The wait time even if you have an appointment. But besides that...the place is wonderful!
I CAN'T BELIEVE THE BAD EXPERIENCE THAT YOU HAD AT ILLUMINATIONS HAIR SALON. I HAVE BEEN A CUSTOMER OF ILLUMINATIONS FOR 2 YEARS AND QUIET FRANKLY I LUV GOING THEIR. TO ME IT IS NOT THAT BAD AS FAR AS THE WAIT. I AM USED TO WAITING FOR EVERYTHING NOW THAT WE ARE IN A NEW MELLINIUM WHERE EVERYTHING IS A WAITING PROCESS. THE PROBLEM WITH PEOPLE OF TODAY IS THAT THIS NEW TECHNOLOGY MAKES PEOPLE FEEL THAT A HUMAN IS A ROBOT AND THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO MOVE AT THE FASTEST PACE. I CAN'T DEFEND THE RUDE AND UNPROFESSIONAL MANNER THAT THE STYLIST AND THE ASSISTANCE PRESENTED OF THEMSELVES. THE ONE THING THAT I CAN SAY IS THAT I ENJOY GOING TO ILLUMINATIONS TO GET MY HAIR DONE. MY HAIR LOOKS BEAUTIFUL AND IT ALWAYS HAS A SHINE WHEN I LEAVE. I ALWAYS GET COMPLIMENTS AND I RECOMMEND THIS SALON WHEREVER I GO. I HAVE NEVER HAD A STYLIST OR AN ASSISTANT TREAT ME IN A RUDE OR UNPROFESSIONAL MANNER SINCE I HAVE BEEN GOING THEIR. I AM SORRY THAT ALL OF YOU HAD A BAD EXPERIENCE. I ADVISE THAT YOU GIVE ILLUMINATIONS A CALL AND ASK TO SPEAK TO THE MANAGER AND TELL HER YOUR EXPERIENCE. SHE IS A VERY GOOD LISTENER AND I KNOW SHE WOULD BE ABLE TO MAKE YOUR NEXT EXPERIENCE TO ILLUMINATIONS BETTER THAN THE FIRST. GIVE THEM A SECOND CHANCE EVERYONE DESERVES ONE. WE AS FELLOW AMERICANS NEED TO HAVE MORE COMMUNICATION WITH ONE ANOTHER TO MAKE THIS WORLD A BETTER PLACE. THIS IS WHAT OBAMA THE PRESIDENT ELECT IS STRIVING FOR CHANGE. SO TAKE MY ADVICE BY TALKNG TO THE MANAGER AND YOU WILL SEE A CHANGE THE NEXT TIME YOU GO THEIR.
