Cafe Ibericolocalbiz rated
Out of all the tapas and Spani...

Out of all the tapas and Spanish cuisine restaurants in Chicago, that are still open, this is the one that I go back to even though it is not incredible or the best I have had. Cafe Iberico is part bar, part cafe, part dining room, but with the noise and crowd it would do be...morest as just a bar and cafe and drop the dining room act because its impossible to "dine" here in any sense of the word. Couple things to take note of: Best Time-- Don't try to beat the dinner rush here, everyone does that and you end up waiting longer than you would if you were to show up in the middle of a big rush. Go Spanish and grab your meal at the end of the normal dinner hour. I have never waited more than ten to fifteen minutes for a table because everyone is clearing out. If you just want to grab a drink and tapas the bar is your best bet, but you have to be aggressive and get the eye of a bartender early. Remember, reservations are not taken here. Ambiance-- It's definitely a get together with a group of friends and catch up type of place. No matter what room you are in, its loud, some spaces are more cramped than others. It's definitely not a romantic or get to know you place to take a date, but perfect for a blind date or those dates you get roped into with someone your meddling mother met at church. Even if you are sitting right next to someone, you will need to raise your voice to be heard. The Food-- Not the best tapas or Spanish cuisine in Chicago, or that I've had, but take it from someone that has lived in Spain and has tried every tapas restaurant in the city and Chicagoland, its way better than most and the best bet for the money. I always order the paella to test a place out, because there is no middle ground with paella, its either good or inedible. I've had both the Paella Marinera and Paella Iberica and it always comes out great, perfect taste, seafood just right, and overall as good as any 4 star Barcelona restaurant. The tapas are always good, and fast, but some of them can be done in larger portions-- even for tapas. The croquettes are as good as mine. My favorites are the Queso de Cabra and Salpicon de Marisco. The wine list provides something for every dish and taste. The Service- Well, its not self serve, but sometimes it can feel that way. Once we never saw our waiter after ordering- someone entirely different brought our food and one dish never came, nor did our check which we had to retrieve at the front. Other trips have had excellent service, so it depends on the night and who you get. One thing though, the wait staff never seems to be familiar with their wine list, so if you ask for a recommendation based on what you are ordering don't expect help- once I was literally told, "They're all good." Luckily, I am decent at picking depending on what I am eating. The Prices- Like I said earlier, its the best bet for the money. There is another place here in Chicago that I like a bit more, but the prices are double or triple. Expect to pay around $12-$18 for an entree and $6-$9 for any of the tapas. view less

Don Juan Restaurantemediatordave1 rated
Taste The Difference

For those Chicagoans who think that all Mexican food is basically the same: YOU HAVEN'T BEEN TO DON JUAN'S !! As a native of Glencoe who has travelled throughout Mexico on several occassions and who has been practicing law in Southern California for over 25 years, I promise ...morethat you will find the food here to be of exceptional quality and rare variety, with service that is family-friendly and knowledgeable. I have a very busy schedule, and I hate to waste time, so I wouldn't bother to write this review if I didn't passionately believe in what I say. One of the best features of the restaurant is that it caters to all palates, including the simple desires of children. You can get tacos (including vennison tacos for the discerning patron), enchiladas(including mole, which are fabulous) and a variety of tamales-all of which are decidedly superior to any I've had either in Chicago or Southern Callifornia (where the competition amongst Mexican restaurants is intense)-or you can "kick it up a notch" with a superlative chicken mole, where the chicken is (God forbid) never overcooked but always succulent ! The steak cubes simmered in a complex red ancho-chili sauce are so tender and the flavor is sublime, and the other beef and poultry dishes are of equal stature. Moreover, the seafood creations are both inventive and feature something still not tasted very often in Chicago: very fresh ocean seafood ! The appetizers range from deliscious clams and shrimp to traditional guacamole, and having lived for decades in the midst of the nation's avocado groves, I assure you that Don Juan procures only the pick of the harvest and knows how to let the rich and nutty flavor of the premium avocados speak for itself, eschewing the habit of other restaurants who have to use spices and hot sauces to mask the mediocrity of their dishes. The desserts are equally interesting and tasty, and the variety of tequilas, and availability of top-grade mescal, might lead you to drift off and believe that you're in a bar in Oaxaca or Vera Cruz rather than Edison Park. The prices are quite reasonable, ranging from rather inexpensive for the top-grade popular fare to higher for the beef and seafood, though still decidedly less than you'd pay for inferior quality dishes of similar ilk at a fancier place. I know many colleagues from Los Angeles who fly through O'Hare on business trips and actually hope they have a layover long enough to allow them to take a taxi to Don Juan for lunch or dinner, so the place is rapidly gaining a national exposure, and for good reason. Chicagoans: It is long past time for your taste buds to tell you what so many of us already know, which is something you will know forever when you walk out of the restaurant with a satisfied stomach and a big smile on your face: "Mexican" food and "fine dining" co-exist in perfect harmony in Edison Park- at Don Juan Restaurant !view less

Billy Goat Tavernleediaz rated
Great Chicago Experience

Being the first review for the Billy Goat Tavern, I definitely have to put a little thought into this review. Located in sub-Michigan, the metal sign for this place is easily missed, found at the top of some stairs across the street from the Tribune building on Michigan...more Ave. The place is definitely old school Chicago, has had crowds of customers for years and carries with it an interesting story. Upon entering, you are greeted by shouts for your order...order a hamburger, they ask if you want a cheeseburger...ask for a single, they ask if you want a double. No fries, chips... No Pepsi, coke. Ask for water...well, you get the flow. Free refills...and go for a double cheese. The burgers are not expensive, but not really cheap. They are heavy on the bun, but I like the fact that you can put your own toppings and condiments. And of course, you'll find your own seats. They do have a bar, which is nice if you want to grab a real drink and watch a game that might be on. This place is classic Chicago... it is even famously associated with the Chicago Cubs... since the original owner supposedly was the one that \"cursed\" the Cubs...long story, so definitely feel free to ask them. The staff is really nice! And because of their relation to the Cubs history, this place draws in a ton of tourists, so the staff will take pictures, answer questions, etc. Just a great experience and a scheduled stop everytime I make it into town. view less
