Given that our goal was to experience the famous Friday Galatoire's lunch, I can't say I was disappointed by the atmosphere. Every Friday the place bustles with local business people who take a late "liquid lunch." At first I was disappointed to be put in the more subdued upstairs area, but was grateful when I realized how deafeningly loud it was downstairs. We ordered an assortment for the table, starting with a nice and spicy bloody mary. The oysters en brochette (fried and wrapped in bacon) were deadly. Tasty, but a little dry, and one is enough. The crab salad was delicious -- super-tender crab topped with mayo and capers. My friends were raving about the fried veggies of eggplant and potato "chips," which I thought were just OK. The seafood gumbo was quite nice. The seafood average, but the roux delicious. For the second drink, the dirty martini was fine, but needed to be a little dirtier. Our waiter recommended the fried crab topped with fish or crab as the best thing on the menu. Indeed the crab was incredibly fresh and tender. But still heavy, with all the fried. A friend's fish was just OK. So all in all, worth the price? Not really, but it was fun to experience part of history in a place that fully encourages you lounge at your own pace.
Attended the Preview Lunch at the Restaurant today. Of course, you would expect the staff to need some additional training, since it was the preview, but this was certaining not true. From the moment we arrived outside, we were greeted by a pleasant staff who were more than accomodatable. We started with two appetizers, Crawfish Cornbread (5 star rating) and Spinich Artichoke Dip . A salad was served , which I enjoyed, but some commented that they did not care for. Thereafter, we enjoyed the Shrimp Skewers, with vegtables and grits, New York Strip and Filet. Everything was cooked as we requested and the steaks were served sizzling at the table. Desert was offered afterwards, Creme Brule' , Bread Pudding and Chocolate Cake, no flour, with scoop of ice cream. My only suggestion was that silverware needed be served with the appetizers. The food was very good, staff excellent and the atmosphere was upscale but relaxing. The pricing seemed a little high, geared towards more of upscale restaurants.
I was recently searching the yp.com for some new uptown restaurants that my husband and I haven't tried. I came across Pascal's which is one of our favorites and read the below review and had to pass a comment along. I have to completely disagree. For the past 15 years I have been a regular customer at Pascal's Manale. Never have I ever been disappointed. The food and service is always up to par. This restaurant is family owned and it has the "old" New Orleans vibe which is definitely rare to come by anymore in the city. The restaurant was given some updates after Katrina which are lovely and kept the same ambiance as before the storm. As for the food, every dish is a good dish. Whatever the specials are, I highly recommend getting them. They oysters Rockefeller & Bienville are amazing, the oyster bar rocks. Also I love how family friendly the restaurant is, as well. If anyone has had a bad experience here, I would definitely recommend giving it another try. It may have been a bad night.
