One of New Orleans' Best Kept Secrets. Nestled away just walking distance from the famous St Charles Street Car line is Le Roux a Supper Club and Banquet facility that is available for both public and private affairs. During it's earlier years, The famous Nite Cap, once stood where Le Roux now stands and was one on the spot s to give birth to the New Orleans Funk we hear and admire today. "If these wall could talk" you could hear many famous and infamous artists that have grace the stage at this historic site, explains Kurte Pellerin, it's current owner. " From R&B Superstars Stevie Wonder, the groups the Chi Lites, The Manhattans, to countless other local greats like Deacon John, The Meters, and The Nevilles 1700 Louisiana Ave has alway provided an enviroment for great entertainment"' Pellerin continues. In keeping with the tradition, Le Roux now offers Live Entertainment weekly on Friday nites. Dining is also available during shows and reservations are encouraged, but not necessary. There is also now a Restaurant section upstairscalled Ray's on the Roof @ Le Roux that features lunchtime dining. The menu is traditional Soul Food. The area is quaint and has a spacious outdoor deck adjacent to the dining room.
One late evening out at Frenchmen's on a rainy night-where the music is great and more of the locals hang out-having spent much time wandering the music venues while ignoring our hungry stomachs, we looked to the bartender for a restaurant suggestion. Knowing we weren't that familiar with the area and were walking, he told us of a couple of places which were close. "But, if you don't mind walking a bit there's a place we all go to after work called Coop's Place..." He was right! We'd been to several places during the several visits to New Orleans from the 5 Star to the funky and Coop's served up the best Cajun food we had ever tried. The Jambalaya was so good, we went back the day we flew out just to pick up an order to go for the classic leftovers at home. The cook even came out to thank us for "the compliment" as we had told the server of our takeout plans. The place is not the suit and tie kind of place but it is a place you can sit and take in the ambiance of outer French Quarter. No, you won't find the finest tableware and starched table cloths, but you will find the finest food of the that region. I can't wait to go again!
... Best meal I had in New Orleans. Now, I've only been there once, but I tried some classics -- Galatoire's, Mothers, Cafe du Monde... A little off the beaten path in the prettier sections of the French Quarter (read: away from Bourbon), Coffee Pot is run by a group of charming older ladies. Service is SLOW, so don't have any important appointments waiting. Waiting to order takes forever, and silverware is an afterthought. But once you do get your food, YUM. Don't come here to order something "normal" like omelettes or a salad -- those things are perfectly fine here, don't get me wrong, but it's the regional fare that sings here. Lost Bread is a requirement. Like a beignet, but made with Po Boy bread and probably the most delicious thing I had on the trip. Also amazing are the The roast beef Po Boy is to die. Meat is tender, bread is crunchy enough to hold up to the sauce, and the sauce is a perfect mix of tangy and sweet. Also amazing are these rice and cinnamon cakes -- can't recall the name, but so good. Go and spend some time!
