I have been going to El Cuervo for the past 25 years, and have never been disappointed. The shop is family-owned, and there is usually at least one family member working at any given time. My favorite is the carnitas - in any form. The carnitas plate (#13 combo) is the best deal on carnitas I've personally come across; it is a plate piled with carnitas, rice, and beans, with tortillas on the side. The pico de gallo is peppy without being hot, and the combination of the subtley spiced carnitas with the pico de gallo and guacamole will make you swoon with delight. Because the combo plate is large, I usually go with the carnitas taco, which gives me all the flavor without the belly-busting volume. I have also had chilaquiles, machaca, and rolled tacos here. All are very good. This restaurant is very crowded at lunch time due to all the University and Mercy hospital employees who stop in for lunch, but the service is fast and good. It is counter service, but there is quite a lot of very comfortable table seating in the restaurant, and a nicely appointed salsa bar.

This is San Diego and you can't swing a golf club with out hitting the ball into a taco shop. So what makes this one special? It's hard to say, but it is at the top of my list for Mexican food. The locals are here once a week if they are shy, two to three if they are hungry (in any of the 24 hours of the day,) and more often if they appreciate an excellent, inexpensive, and filling meal. The ratings here might not be good, but that is only because of the fast food tables and styrofoam plates. Since you don't eat those, this place is almost 5 stars. And do not be put off by the bars around the open kitchen-counter they are a quaint tribute to the past when this neighborhood was strictly gang turf. Those days are gone and the neighbor hood and this place are family friendly. It is open 24 hours and is good before or after a Padre game, or if you partied too hard at the Turf Club for drinks and not steaks. A good Carne Asada burrito will soak up all that gin and juice and mitigate your hangover. The Carne Asada Fries are a must have.
I think Pokez spot is cool. I love the food over any mexican resturant hands down. They serve the freshest ingrediants I've ever tastied. Not only is there food wonder but the staff there is amazing you feel right at home when you walk inside. The people are friendly loving and know the value of customer service. I would eat there everyday if I could. Finally, we are in a ression people can barely afford to eat out with todays prices. With Pokez resonable menu it just cost a few dollars to enjoy great food.I enjoy enlimited, fresh chips and sasla plus a great meal and a drink all for under $8 bucks.
