The owner of Mr. K’s Carpet Service – James Knowles who is responsible for all in house training has been trained in the following IICRC courses, Carpet Cleaning, Upholstery Cleaning, Leather Cleaning, Color Restoration (Spot Dyeing), Flood Damage Restoration, and Mold Remediation. Our staff all strictly adhere to the procedures trained here that will produce an end product that meets our standards. One of these strict procedures trained here is to use an I stroke instead of the most commonly used W stroke. An I stroke makes better use of the heat generated (which equals BTUs or Energy) by your equipment while a W stroke relies on dwell time of the first stroke before coming back with the 2nd and many times final stroke. As stated earlier our main criteria is to get your carpet clean, and if that means in high traffic areas going over the carpet with 10 or 15 or as many strokes as needed to do the job, as well as the use of traffic lane pre-conditioners at no extra charge to you, that’s what we do. Our feeling here at Mr. K’S Carpet Service is that on average you clean your carpets once a year and your main concern should be that they come clean. If that means that for that one day the carpets are a little damp for as much as 24 hours that is better than having them look like nothing was ever done two days later.

Below are pictures of a before and after Tile & Grout Cleaning Job It was stated by this customer that this floor had been recently cleaned 3 separate times, once with bleach, and two times with store bought ceramic tile cleaners and scrub brushes as well as even a tooth brush on the grout lines. The homeowner was unaware if it had ever been professionally cleaned.

Stain Removal
First blot up as much of the lotion as possible with white paper towels until nothing is transferring into the towels. At this point to proceed safely without doing further damage to carpet we will need to perform a test. Many hand lotions have oxidizers that become activated with the introduction of moisture. If these oxidizers are present they may cause color loss bleaching when further spot removal is attempted. If a remnant of carpet is available the same lotion should be applied and rinsed with Water Solution and blot until no more moisture will transfer into paper towels. After 24 hours if no color loss is apparent you can proceed with spot cleaning. If there is color loss have the spot professionally cleaned to minimize the spread of color loss area. This may then either be spot dyed or patched afterward, but a smaller area may be affected with proper cleaning.
Steam Cleaning
When cleaning many fine fabrics we may either use a combination of steam cleaning and hand shampooing, or a moisture barrier cleaning technique. When cleaning velvets we are careful to clean, soften, and re-groom all the fibers to their original alignment.

The next step is to set up a closed drying cycle. To do this you will need to close off all exterior windows and close off any areas not affected by flood to reduce the total cubic feet of area you are working on. You will want to bring the temperature to approximately 72 degrees Fahrenheit, this is the optimum temperature for drying. A common misconception when trying to dry a dwelling is that high heat is optimum for drying. While high heat will dry faster, high air temperature will also raise the mold spore count through the roof creating a perfect breeding ground for fungi in the presence of high humidity which is common in flooding conditions. The only exception to this would be if you have infra-red radiant heat which only heats objects in the room not the air. With infra-red radiant heat you would be able to heat walls above air temperature creating higher vapor pressure in wet structural material than that of the air, which would decrease structural drying time. You probably don’t have radiant heat and this is very complex drying theory, so just set your heat on 72 degrees Fahrenheit for the best outcome.
Mold Remediation
This information only pertains to floods on ground floors with concrete underneath. Any flood that has wood or other structural materials with cellulose fiber that would be a food source for microbial growth underneath a layer of carpet should be addressed by a flood restoration professional. Failure to properly address wet structural materials will become much more damaging to the dwelling than the replacement cost of carpeting. For this reason and the consideration of the extreme expense of mold remediation the dwelling is always of first concern. Any flood that is not addressed within 12 hours also should not be attempted without consultation of a flood restoration professional as secondary damage needs to be assessed for a proper drying plan.
