This steakhouse was recommended to us by a local . My wife ordered the sirloin and I ordered the filet.
Both were tender and flavorful. My wife commented that the sirloin could have passed for a filet. It was so tender. The gorgonzola topping could have been melted on the filet instead of being placed on top like a pat of butter. The sides were also flavorful but average. The ambience is equivelant to a cross between an outback steakhouse and marie callenders. From the website appearance I thought it would make a romantic setting. Go to Shadowbrook for that. The wait staff was very friendly and prompt. The meal cost could be less. I paid almost what I paid at Shadowbrook for the same order. The filet there is comparable.
The cost could be 10-15% less at Hindquarter. We'd probably return for lunch.

A group of mid-30's professional men and I thought we'd start off a buddy's bachelor party with a great steak dinner before hitting the town. We got a decent meal at best.
We began with the appetizer sampler. The artichoke hearts and calamari were passable. The popcorn shrimp could have come from Popeye's Chicken, the buffalo wings were inedible, and the dipping sauces tasted like they were fresh out of a bottle.
I have no real complaints about the various steaks we ordered (aside from needing a sprinkle of salt), but the special gorgonzola butter seemed to lack any trace of the cheese, and came as a slab on top of the steaks. Two of my friends said, ""It just tasted like herb butter to me -- it could have used some actual cheese on top.""
The mushrooms my steak was topped with were the little white button variety, had zero flavor, and the red wine demi-glaze was nearly impossible to detect. Also, one of my friends ordered the exact same steak but it looked like we received two entirely different cuts of meat.
The vegetable side was fine, but the best way to describe it would be veggie chunks that needed to be cut into the usual bite-sized pieces.
The mashed potatoes were pretty tasty, but nothing special.
Finally, the drinks we ordered with our appetizer platter didn't arrive until our meal was served -- half an hour after we ordered. We couldn't find our waitress until then, either.
I can't imagine our experience at such an established restaurant being that far from their norm, especially on a Saturday night. I was very disappointed. The closest equivalent I can think of is the Sizzler -- another restaurant I don't plan on visiting again. Outback Steakhouse, while not great, would be a step up from my experience at the Hindquarter.

If you want a great piece of cooked flesh, this is the spot. No hippy veggies, no whole grain fu-fu stuff. Steak house decor with a meat filled menu. The staff are attentive and aim to please. They are ready to listen to exactly how you want your dsih cooked. Check out the nightly specials; Wends is Prime rib, so damn good. The pork chops are double cut and so moist. The baby back ribs are also a winner. You biggest issue is picking just one.

Hindquarter is a decent local?s steakhouse with good chicken and ribs. Good drink values and friendly bar and wait staff make it a comfortable place to get some good down home cooking. Large selection of single malt scotches and specialty vodkas make the bar one of the better watering holes in town. Full menu and 3 TV?s in the bar makes it a good place for singles or sports fans to grab a decent meal while catching a game. I?d say its kid friendly if you have restaurant friendly kids.

First of all, the food was great. That said, we had our 3 1/2 yr old and 9 month old with us because we were on vacation and didn't have a sitter with us. I researched ahead of time online to find places that were kid friendly. This place said it was good for kids. It is set up to serve kids, but when we walked in I thought we'd just landed on another planet! Everyone was staring at us! We are very conscious of our kid's behavior, but we didn't notice that our son was accidentally tapping the booth with his feet. Another patron rudely asked my husband to ""do something about your son."" Even the waiter made a comment about how we ""needed to get those two home."" There were no other kids there. For adults, it was nice, but take your kids somewhere they will feel welcome!!!

Santa Cruz is kind of known for it's veggie and counter culture dining. Well, it's so nice to see the Hindquarter and I was so glad to have a nice big juicy steak! You totally made my night. Even my wife loved it and she doesn't tend to eat much in the way of beef. Thanks and keep up the good work!
