The service...... Yikes

Hello to everyone out there wanting to visit Machu Picchu, I am first going to start off with "Food To Go", I would say food to go is your best bet, why I'm sure you must be asking, because no one wants to see the owner (Elena) yelling/screaming at her employees in front of them while their eating (and it doesn't happen once in a while, it happens every time.)
"The Bread" When you're waiting for your food to arrive you're served bread with butter and aji (complimentary of course), the first serving you receive of bread is pretty fresh, but be careful in ordering more, because the second batch you'll find to be not as so, I'm assuming the waiters have been instructed to bring out the 'day old' bread at that point.
"The Yelling and Humiliating" The yelling and humiliating towards her employees I must express is the worst part while dining there. You'll find her telling her waiters in spanish how "dumb" and "stupid" they are (yes, don't be surprised if you find her scorning them practically in front of your eyes.)
"The Food" The plates i would most recommend are "pollo saltado or lomo saltado", "tallarin verde" and for appetizers, "papa a la huacaina" or "ceviche mixto".
All in all I still 'even' order to go solely because of the food, if you order to go (I figured) you take the most unpleasant part out of the food experience, so that's what I've been doing for the last 4 months, and must say i enjoy the food better now.

Best Peruvian Restaurant in the Bay Area, Friendly and Good Customer Service

My daughter, Christina Kho, and I ordered the mouth watering Ceviche de Mariscos, a seafood mixed marinated in fresh lemon juice with sliced onions, slice of corn, and sweet potato, followed by Antichucos, marinated beef heart served with boiled potatoes for appetizer. The beef heart was cooked just right, so tender and delicious with the peruvian marinade. The friendly nephew of the owner, Eric, recommended Lomo Saltado, beef sauteed with onions, tomatoes, french fries, and rice. The strips of beef loin were juicy and cooked just right and blended well with Chicha Morada, a red colored drink made out of corn. For dessert, my daughter and the Helado de Lucuma, an yummy orange colored Peruvian Ice Cream, and the delicious Alfajor, the delicious Peruvian cookie.
Overall ,our experience in this restaurant is excellent and we highly recommend this restaurant. Very friendly owner and Eric , who made the recommendations was surely a big help.

Best Peruvian Food in San Mateo

Machu Picchu is probably the best peruvian food I've tried here in the US and definitely the best in San Mateo.
The place is small and not really sight appealing, so if you see people there it's certainly because of the really good food.
If you know about peruvian food, you should shouldn't miss: Ceviche de Pescado, Seco, Carapulcra, Mondonguito, Sancochado, Olluquito, and Pan con chicharron... But try to stay away from the Aji de Gallina, Arroz con Mariscos, and Jalea (While acceptable, they are not the way my granny used to make them :) sorry...)

And if you don't have much experience with peruvian food just go for anything there, really good food overall you won't regret it. (Just ask what kind of meat the plate contains... some meat might be too exotic for your taste :) But if you are adventurous go for cau-cau, mondoguito, or anticuchos... they have them really authentic)

Ceviche is a must if you enjoy seafood. It's fish cooked with lime juice, so it kinda taste like japanese sashimi (but 10 times better :) )...

Also get a chance to try peruvian beer (Cuzquena is my favorite) or Chicha Morada (if you don't drink alcohol). Chicha Morada is a refreshing drink made out of purple corn, pineapple, apple among it's main ingredients (ask for it by the pitcher).

And the prices are right, main course range from $8-$12, and they have lunch specials from noon-3pm Mon-Fri (I guess) but give them a call to confirm.

Provecho.
