we started our 4 year old here about 6 months ago.
the main problem is with their shady pay-by-subscription methods. at first they wanted us to sign up for 1 year. i said no, then they said they could do 6 months which i fell for.
what they did not make clear was that it was a subscription, and i was actually signing an auto-withdrawal contract. worse yet, it required 30 days prior notice to cancel. i called to cancel prior to the next 6-month set of sessions to find i was too late to cancel, and costing me another $800 that i can not afford.
i have no doubt that the 4-page contract i signed spelled this all out, but the owner DID NOT make it clear what was going on. i fully thought that i was paying for one 6-month session.
the racket, and i've seen it many times after it was done to me, is that the owner does a 1-1 evaluation with your child. he's VERY good with kids and makes your child feel very excited about continuing. then he gives you the sales pitch, which of course you can't turn down because now your child is excited about attending. even if you have second thoughts, you've just signed a contract so too late.
the question is, what's wrong with just letting people pay for the services they want? the answer is the same as for many other shady businesses ... they are relying on people forgetting to cancel, or being ignorant of the contract (like me), or just being lazy, to make their money instead of simply providing a good service that keeps people coming back.
the owner himself has nothing to do with the instruction of your child. it's taught exclusively by high school (junior high?) age kids. to be fair these instructors are quite good with the children, but don't get the idea that your child will be under the tutelage of a martial arts expert.
as for the service itself, at the 4 year old level anyway, it's basically semi-organized play time. the program has nothing to do with martial arts at this level. save yourself the money and let your child play at the playground for an hour.

I took my child there for a birthday party. The child's whose birthday it was a member of the school. I became very irritated at the instructor's (David) persistence in using this opportunity to get kids signed up at his school. He went up to each parent NUMEROUS times asking them when they would like to schedule a free trial class. He also proceeded to tell the kids to make sure to tell their parents that they want to come back. At the end, he was walking around with his calendar book open and pressuring the parents to sign up their kids one last time. I would understand the sales tactic if I took my child to a trial class because I was looking to enroll them in a martial art. I think it was a total waste of money for the birthday child's parents to pay for a party that David used as a HIGH PRESSURE marketing opportunity. He might be an expert in his art, but he showed a true lack to class and judgment. I could never respect an instructor like him and would definitely not want him as someone who my child would have to look up to.

My son, 4 years old, has responded very favorably to
the friendly environment at Wushu Central and is
making significant progress. The teachers are very
patient and infuse alot of fun into each lesson. My
son really looks forward to attending his classes.
If you're into Jet Li style kung fu, Wushu Central is the right place for you. This friendly and energetic school offers a wide variety of classes that teach different styles of empty hand and weapon forms. Class size is fairly small, so you get a lot of individual attention from the instructors. People are friendly, supportive and encouraging. It has become my second home in the bay area!
My daughter can't get enough, even after 3 years. She's done their Little Heroes and Wushu Kidz program. Their tumbling and padded weapons classes are among her favorites, and her friends loved her 5th birthday party there. The location is great and it's very convenient to have such a variety of programs for all ages offered in one place. The coaches are fun and funny which keeps her motivated to work towards her martial arts goals.
I have been attending Wushu Central for about year, and it has been an awesome experience. What really stood out about the studio for me was that not only are the instructors motivated and teach and genuinely want to help the students improve, but the students are just a motivated to get better and improve their technique. Whether the student is just starting out or has been doing martial arts for years, the staff at Wushu Central will always fins a way to challenge each student, keeping class interesting while encouraging everyone to work harder.
