- Mimi s Caf restaurant No. 29 in San Jose, Calif., is one of more than 90 locations the company maintains throughout the United States. The restaurant was founded with the intention of combining the best assets of every type of restaurant. That is why Mimi s features the quality, ambiance and personal service of a dinner house, combined with the convenience and great value of a coffee shop, all in a country cottage setting with New Orleans d cor. We would like to bring to your attention one of the most unpleasant experiences we had at the Mimi?s Caf? located on 1200 El Paseo De Saratoga, San Jose, CA. The incident happened this past Mother?s day. We, a group of 3 families with a total of 11 people, went for brunch to the Mimi?s Caf? at the above location. The brunch was supposed to be a Mother?s Day surprise from the children to each of their respective mothers. One of the children called the Mimi?s Caf? the previous night to make a reservation and the employee informed him that they do not take reservations for Mother?s Day. Therefore, he went early in the morning, stood in line, and put his name on the waiting list. He was told there was a 2-hour wait. He returned with us after around 2 hours. When we got there we were told there was still a 20-minute wait. We waited patiently and finally our turn came and the assistant manager Thomas came out and called one of our last names. The minute he saw us his displeasure to serve us was readily apparent from his demeanor. He immediately complained that we were a party of 11 instead of 10, as we originally anticipated, when other restaurants would have readily offered an extra chair to deal with the unforeseen situation.
He went inside and sent out another assistant manager Tim Young to deal with us. Despite being on the waiting list for over 2 hours, Mr. Young informed us that we could have a table provided we finish our meal in 90 minutes adding in a surly tone that ?our cooperation in this matter will be appreciated?. We did not see such restrictions being placed on anybody else waiting there before or after us. We agreed to the restriction and were seated on a table (?Table 1?) by Mr. Young. A few minutes later, Mr. Young returned and demanded that we will have to change our table and showed us a smaller table (?Table 2?) with dirty linens. He once again rudely reminded us that we would have to finish our meal in the time he allotted to us. We acceded to his demands without any complaints.
Pablo our waiter came to our table and observed the poor crammed condition in which we were seated and took pity on us. He went back and consulted with someone and when he returned he told us we should go back to Table 1. We asked Pablo whether he was sure about that and he assured us that it was OK to sit at Table 1. We went back to Table 1. We want to make it clear that Pablo was the only employee at Mimi?s Caf? that day who seemed to understand that all the customers should be treated equally. Pablo took our orders and brought our drinks and coffee for us. While we were having our drinks and coffee Thomas returned to our table and demanded that we move back to Table 2. This time we put our foot down and refused to be treated like second class citizens. Once again Thomas resorted to Mr. Young to do his dirty job. Mr. Young came back and demanded that we either go back to Table 2 or gestured us to leave and we chose to leave. The fact that this was meant to a special surprise Mother?s Day event thrown by the kids seemed to be lost on him. All he could muster in a rather remorseless and sarcastic tone was ?have a good day? even as Pablo kept repeating, ?you can?t be leaving?.
In our many years of living in the U.S., this was one of the few times we experienced blatant racism. We were humiliated by the treatment that we received that day at the Mimi?s Caf?. We were also appalled by our encounter with the two assistant managers of Mimi?s Caf? in a place like Silicon Valley where the norm is for people of mixed races to co-exist in harmony.

Mimi's is absolutely delicious from their fresh blueberry muffins to my absolute favorite veggie quesadillas. they have something for everyone. My friends & I are in college & were @ first hesitant to eat there and now we're addicted! =) Mimi's all the way!

My husband and I have eaten lunch here many times and the service is very good. The hosts and waiters are very friendly and the wait is never long. The menu is pretty basic American fare with a few stand-outs. The roasted chicken with mashed potatoes is quite yummy and filling. A selection of warm bread is brought to the table. Portions are generous and we usually bring close to half of our meal home. The atmosphere is very casual and you never feel rushed.
