Wonderful Executive Chef and Family

After reading in the Silicon Valley Life magazine that my old friend Salvatore Calisi was the new executive chef I decided to take a ride to Fratellos, 1712 Meridian Ave, San Jose, to sample my Italian friend’s new menu.

As I entered, I was impressed with the atmosphere…a nicely crowded dining area with a few seats at the bar, shaped like a half horseshoe. The ambiance was further enhanced by a guitar player singing traditional Italian songs.

A warm greeting from my friend Salvatore, who is proud of his kitchen and staff, introduced me to all of them. Since I was alone I decided to take a seat at the bar where I was greeted by the lovely bartender, Ashley….who quickly served me a glass of Pride Mountain Merlot….delicious.

For an appetizer I ordered the grilled Italian Octopus, with lemon Olive Oil and Silician oregano. The octopus was grilled perfectly and the texture and flavor was wonderful and will certainly be on my “to order list” again. As I savoured the flavors I ordered a salad. I chose the oven roasted chilled beets, with candied pecans and goat cheese. This was presented beautifully and only the taste exceeded the presentation….a delightful mix of sweet and tart flavors….really very tasty.

Since I was in an Italian restaurant I thought I would try a first a pasta course, I am assured that all pastas are made from scratch, and chose the Fettucine al Norcino which meant Homemade semolina noodles with Berkshire Pork and beef, fire roasted tomatoes and other flavorings…..to die for…I have no idea of the flavorings used but just delicious….

For my main course the Branzino, I had a taste for some fish and this was a great choice…an imported Italian sea bass, rosemary roasted potatoes and local bay vegetables….absolutely cooked to perfection and I ate every last piece.

All my dishes were served leisurely without any rush and the whole meal was delightful. I watched as diners around had Veal Chops, braised lamb shanks, spaghetti with clams, mussels, prawns……an extensive menu to suit everybody’s taste. So much to taste, I have to return…

After dinner I was introduced to members of the family that own the restaurant, Carmine, his sister and brother. All of the staff were taking care of everyone in a wonderful, friendly manner and their desire to please was easy to see.. ""we are here to serve you as best we can""

I finished the evening with a Drambuie and coffee…..a delightful evening. I am sure to return and recommend to all and sundry.

To summarize all in all a fabulous evening for around $50…and a definite promise to return.

family owned Italian restaurant

Food arrives hot, and it's good. Entertainment on Friday night plays to the baby boomer crowd with a Dean Martin impersonator.
The owners are very friendly.
Sometimes the kitchen can be slow.

A restaurant you'll never forget

My family and I arrived at this restaurant about 30 minutes before closing on a Saturday night. We called in advance so they were expecting us. My husband and I had a funny feeling that something wasn't right, being that there were only three tables that were occupied on a weekend night. (bad sign). The service was prompt, but the food was horrible. All of our entrees had very small portions and the sauces if any, were bland and cold. My pasta dinner did not have wine sauce like the menu posted, and the sausage was more like a pizza topping. My husband and kids had ravioli's and there may have been three or four small ravioli's on each plate. Let's just say that we left Fratello's feeling hungry and unsatisfied. This is one family that will never go back. And we dine out often!!!!

Decent Food, Awful Service

My colleague and I decided on this restaurant because it was recommended by a coworker. We now wonder if he was secretly holding a grudge against us, and wanted us punished. The service was so poor, that we wondered if they were politely trying to convince us to leave. We were told that swordfish was one of the specials that evening. When we ordered the swordfish, we were told that if there was not enough swordfish, bass would be substituted. We agreed. We also decided to order the artichoke soup we were told was being offered. When the soup arrived, it was so lukewarm that we were compelled to ask if it was actually a cold soup. We were told that it was not. A server offered to warm it for us. 10 minutes later, it was returned, only slightly warmer. We both got the swordfish, which was good. After dinner, we ordered a cappuccino and a latte. The cappuccino was served in a 2-3 oz demitasse. Even in Italy, cappuccino is serverd in a larger cup, usually 6-8 oz size. The latte was served in a glass tumbler. Since there was no handle, the server had to protect his hands w/a napkin. Obviously, my dinner partner could not hold the glass until it cooled. The service we received could not have been any worse if they'd met in a huddle to strategically plot the method to achieve the ultimate goal: make the guests pay to be offended. I wonder if all they really wanted was for us to leave.

Dining at Fratello's

We came across this restaurant looking for somewhere to eat. The food is fabulous. The service is great. The place has an ambiance that takes you away from the outside and gives that European feel. It is quaint enough for two and is also great for a large group as well.

Certainly in the top five Italian Restaurants I've ever experienced.

Having owned an Italian restaurant ourselves and only having prepared only home style cooking, we recommend Fratello's, wholeheartedly. The food is great the owners are genuinely hospitable and happy to see you there. The house chianti is very good and fairly priced. La sorella is a genuine as her brothers and is very accommodating. If you go there once you'll just keep going back.

best atmosphere and best cannelloni

This place is great! They have really good italian food (chicken parm, cannelloni, seafood ravioli, sausage pollenta, caesar salad, bread pudding etc) and they have live music on the weekend. It's a nice atmosphere to go eat good food and relax.

Best Southern Italian Food Anywhere

Have always had excellent food here. Yes, The 1st reviewer mentioned extra wait time for certain things. This is true when they are busy, which is always the case. Atmosphere is excellent and the food and people have always been excellent. Wish they could expand.

Carmine (the owner) has a gold mine here

uuuuummmmmm... no

We were seated immediately. 20 minutes to get menus. We then waited 15 minutes for a server. 15 minutes for our wine. Never brought kids drinks. Another 15 minutes before we ordered. 35 minutes until our entrees were brought out. We ordered dessert and coffees. Coffee came in 10 minutes... 10 minutes later we finally asked if iur dessert was coming... and 10 minutes later it arrived.

The food was acceptable. Dessert was ordinary. Prices ok.... there's better.
