My family's favorite restaurant

Playa Azul

by Cynthia Gomez, grade 5
Mission Dolores School

Playa Azul is my favorite restaurant. It's at 29th
Street and Mission. It's a Salvadorean restaurant.
The name means ""blue beach."" I go every time
there's a birthday for someone in my family. My
parents give the person a surprise and they say
""wow!"" Six people always go: my mom, my dad,
my sisters Jessica and Diana, my uncle Ricardo,
and me.

The restaurant is big, it's blue, and it has pictures
of birds and a lot of tables. When they cook, the
fire goes up. I like the Caesar salad. It has fried
shrimp, chicken, white cheese, tomato, and lemon
sauce. Everyone in my family likes to get
tostadas, fish, meat, rice and beans, pupusas and
chicken. After I eat, I order a big strawberry
shake with whipped cream. Some people order
horchata. Older people drink margarita or Corona
beer.

I like to go to Playa Azul because I am
Salvadorean. My mom is from San Miguel and
my dad is from Ahuachap?in. I was born in
America but I have never been to El Salvador.

My mom likes to cook Salvadorean food at home
but she doesn't cook as well as the restaurant.
She taught me how to cook tostadas and tamales.
Tamales are made out of masa, chicken, potato,
and the juice of the chicken. I love Salvadorean
food! At Playa Azul I like to taste all my favorite
food. I recommend you go there.

Decent food, painstakingly slow service...

FOOD: Ordered the coctel campechano and a tostada de ceviche de pescado. The coctel was tasty enough. The tostada on the other hand was not. Although I know some people do this, it is not typical, normal, or cool for a Mexican restaurant to serve a ceviche tostada slathered with mayo (underneath the ceviche). This should and does require a fair warning to the person ordering it so a choice can be made. An ?authentic? tostada de ceviche is NOT served with mayo and the only people (family) I know who do this were raised in the states. The waitress?s comment that customers know to ask for their tostada to be prepared without the mayo makes no sense as it is not a listed ingredient on the menu.
SERVICE: The restaurant was packed when we arrived and throughout most of our time spent sitting waiting for our food (Mexico was playing in the Copa America). That being said, waiting 45 min for two cocteles and two tostadas is ridiculous. While the food server apologized our waitress never acknowledged that it was at least one hour from the time that she took our order to the time she came back to check on us. We were almost half-way through our food before she actually checked to make sure we had what we needed (which we didn?t). People around us also had to flag down a server when they needed something, however, it did not make me feel any better that others were also in the same predicament. I?d rather make the trek to Oakland to Tijuana?s the next time I have a seafood craving. I?d be able to get out there, eat, and get back to the city in the same time as this meal took without the aggravation of waiting needlessly.

Great Food!!

This place is the place to be in the Mission District. This is a very clean restaurant with good and authentic food. I recommend trying their 'fillete relleno' - it's to die for.

Absolutely Fantastic

Met a Mexican girl on a flight and asked her to recommend a restaurant where she would eat, suggesting one of the Taquerias. To my surprise, she said that there are no burritos in Mexico and recommended this restaurant.

Went there and had absolutely great food, just like what I had on a trip to Mexico city. Authentico, delicious, spicy. The atmosphere is pure family and the staff is friendly.

Go there and get the taste of real Mexico. This is where the Mexicans eat.
