I grew up in San Francisco and live on Telegraph Hill a few blocks away from #9. My feeling has always been the wharf is the wharf.... and most of the places at the wharf are about the same foodwise. Fisherman's Grotto and Scoma's have some of the same touristy issues that the entire wharf suffers- but these two are a cut way above. I have read all the reviews below and can only say I have never had an experience any thing like theirs. We send many guests there and have heard nothing but happy, positive comments. It is old San Francisco. Yes, it is traditional but does everything have to be granite and halogen- lit decor? The Venetian room downstairs is charming and the views upstairs - the best. The comment above about the restaurant being closed are totally untrue. Here's to the next 50 years!

My girlfriend and I chose this place for our Valentines Day dinner. We had a 7:30pm reservation. When we arrived the place was packed. This is a huge restaurant and when we saw it packed we knew it must be good. We had to wait about 15 minutes while they prepared our table. Not a big deal. We sat upstairs in the Florentine Room which had a beautiful view of the harbor, bay and city Skyline. The GF and I shared the Mussels Bordelaise as an appetizer. It was very delicious and a very generous portion. The garlic, parsley, wine sauce was very flavorful and we used the fresh baked sourdough bread to soak it all up after finishing the mussels. I had the Steak and Lobster and GF had the Broiled Swordfish. The steak was about an 8oz Filet Mignon, cooked Medium to perfection. The 1/2 Lobster Tail was simple; broiled with drawn butter on the side. So fresh, so delectable and plump. Had a bite of the Swordfish and it too was simply a fresh piece of fish cooked to perfection, finished with a little lemon butter. Melted in my mouth.... There must have been 300 people eating that day, yet somehow our waiter was able greet us kindly, guide us through the menu, get us our food quickly and attend to us with whatever we needed. The vast size of this restaurant and their ability to provide the highest quality food and service under extreme circumstances make this a truly phenomenal operation. Thank you Geraldi Family!!!

I am a native San Franciscan and have a true appreciation for the rich history of the city. I grew up hearing about the Fishermen's Grotto, as it is one of the top attractions on the Wharf. I think I went as a kid but hadn't been in years. On Friday, I attended a holiday party at the Fishermen's Grotto and had the BEST time! We started in the bar area and had cocktails and crab cakes (delicious!) There was plenty of space to accommodate our large group of 50. We then had dinner at the far window facing the Golden Gate Bridge and Fishing Harbor. The views are spectacular! Imagine eating a hot bowl of clam chowder while taking in these phenomenal sites (bring your camera!). The owner of the restaurant stopped by, introduced himself and told us a bit about the history of the restaurant and his family. It is rare that the owner of a restaurant will take the time to do this. The waiters were very efficient and made sure that we all had our salmon and steak dishes on time. The food tasted fresh and flavorful and the portions are generous. What more could you ask for? I am going to bring my family here for the holidays. I can't wait to go back!

Being a local, I've learned that the Wharf can be quite charming weekdays from October through May. I go to Fishermen's Grotto quite often each year during that time (Note** San Francisco Dungeness Crab season occurs during many of those months). The Grotto is my favorite restaurant on the Wharf, and yes, I've been to all the old joints.
Their prices are the best in the area. The owners are the most down to earth of the restaurants in the area.. The food is simple, but high in quality. The ambiance (esp. music) is charming. The view is great. The decor is nostalgiac. The service is warm, friendly and quick. I love this place.
