I travel frequently to London and always miss the incredible Indian food they serve. I have tried every Indian restaurant in San Diego and Gourmet India is the first that matches the quality of London; However, Gourmet India has is own uniqueness that you will not find in London. The food is geared more toward hot weather climates, so Londoners will find a number of items on the menu that they never see in the UK. They also have a number of incredible beers from all parts of India. I recommend the India Special, which is about two 12 oz beers in volume. This is also a great place for vegetarians or vegans as is provides many dining options. The location is very close to the parking garage in Horton Plaza (to the right of the main parking entrance on 4th and F Streets). You can park in Horton Plaza and validate your ticket in the Mall for three hours of free parking. The ambiance is not a fancy as some of its downtown competition, but the great food, lower prices, better customer service, and fun people watching from the outdoor dining area more than compensate. Gourmet India charges extra for rice (so do most Indian restaurants in San Diego), but the rice high quality and is prepared as a dish. I recommend the vegetable rice of the day. My favorite appetizer is Uttapam, which is a popular griddle cake from Bombay, made from cream of wheat, topped with tomatoes, onions, light green chili, cilantro, served with sambar soup and coconut chutney. I also recommend the Mulgutany Soup with chicken, but is also comes with vegetables. The soup is a lentil of the day cooked with ginger, onion, tomatoes and coconut milk. All of the curries are excellent and homemade. The chef/owner will also make nearly anything upon request. I occasionally ask for chicken yogurt saffron, which is not on the menu. I also like to order Chicken Tikka Masala, a marinated tandoor cooked boneless chicken, served in a tomato saffron sauce. The Murg Korma is also spectacular. It has boneless pieces of chicken cooked in an enticing cream sauce with nuts and raisins. The lunch buffet is basic and very nice, but I prefer ordering from the menu. If you like Indian cuisine, I highly recommend Gourmet India! I also recommend reading this review: http://www.sandiegoreader.com/news/2006/oct/18/where-frankie/
Last week, friend of mine and I were walking on market street. and we heard this Indian music so we just walked in and we didn't even plan to eat but the environment made us hungry. It was saturday evening so they had a special sitar player playing the traditional indian tunes. And on request we could get a table near the sitar player, dat was awesome. In dinner we had chiken tikka masala, a vegetable curry (that day was saag panner which is spinach and cottage cheese), daal curry, papadum, salad with raita dressing and dessert which was gulabjamun. And also, we ordered garlic naan for each of us and mango lassi for dinks. The food was wordless, amazing. One word to describe the food is "WOW" and for the customer service "excellent" and for the environment "amazing". Food is not spicy. It was perfect and as per our expected spice level, also here you have a choice to choose b/w mild, med, hot or indian hot ;)... Their servers are friendly and always smiling. Excellent vegetable curry and the "BEST" chicken tikka masala in TOWN! I will be having my next family party over there in few weeks. I guarantee, all my guests will love there food. Royal India is the BEST INDIAN CUISINE in the town... PS: I strongly recommend Indian food lovers to visit this place if you really want to eat good quality and tasty food in your life with the real feel of Indian style food!!!!!!"
Go to this place once and try the food once. ITS WORTH IT! I AM HOOKED!!!! whenever i go never feel like coming bak..... dnt miss. try fast :) ” I went to this Indian Restaurant and realized how delicious indian food is. And thats all because of the good quality and good quantity food. Well, I am concerned to sit on the computer and write about it so you can imagine how good the food was. The service was EXCELLENT. NO WORDS.. Though it was busy saturday night but still It didn't took them much time to seat me so that was very impressing to me. If you do go there please try there chicken tikka masala, and veg. bhajis. This is the only place where I got the papdums in the starting with the two different kinds of chutneys. They were amazing as since we were starving of hunger so that relievd us a bit. The service and servers were also too good and also our order didn't took much time to come and the spices were as per our requirement.. dats amazing.I cant handle too much spice so it was good for my tummy. Naan was soo fresh and soft. Saag paneer was not too oily at all - good for my tummy again it was equally dilicious. I wish to come here everyday..
