Arnold worked out there. So did the re-surging Lou Ferrigno. Many of the Chargers used to. Even Steve Reeves. That last name might not ring a bell, but he was a popular actor in the fifties and sixties, which provides a good idea of exactly how long Stern’s Gym has been a tradition in fitness; since 1946 to be exact. And the current owner, Shannon Brown, who bought Stern’s in 1994, wants to keep it that way.
While many gyms get continual surges of new equipment, Shannon is more than happy to only update when it seems necessary, such as adding more cardio machines. As for the rest of the equipment? Some of it has been around for upwards of fifteen years and it works just like the new machines. There are no gimmicks at Stern’s Gym, just good old-school workouts.
When it comes figuring whether a place can provide a healthy work out, Shannon stands as exemplary evidence. Once a Detroit football player, he retired from the game and found a friend in body building. He continued this career when he moved to San Diego in ’83, falling for the good weather and dynamic of the city. And having worked out at Stern’s Gym, when the place went up for sale, he made sure to make it his. As owner he has found his customers showing the same dedication to the no-nonsense workout that he always upheld. Thus Stern’s Gym has remained the same over the years, the people who keep finding it are just like the people who have always found it.
