I have to say I am hesitant to even give this place one star. The hot and sour soup was neither. The crab/cheese wontons require a magnifying glass to find the cheese. The egg rolls, while chock full of mystery meat, are totally flavorless unless doused in hot mustard. However, I was hesitant to use the crud crusted mustard cup that looked like something I lost in my fridge six months ago. The bbq pork lo mein was pork and snow peas on spaghetti and also flavorless (the theme of this place). Finally the general's chicken was promptly thrown in the trash after biting into a piece of broccoli that literally tasted like a piece of garbage. Needles to say, all food was tossed without regret.

Decor was typical of a mom and pop Chinese restaurant - old and unkempt furnishings. Our server was great - friendly and helpful. They charge an extra $1 for their lunch special if you dine in, which makes one feel like the owners would prefer you eat your food elsewhere. The cream cheese wontons did not have any cream cheese in them. And the chicken chow mien was average at best. The egg flour soup was the best I've ever had, but I will not be returning.

I was seriously jonesing for Chinese food and this was on the way home, so I thought I'd try it. I ordered the BBQ Pork chow mein and Chicken with snow peas to go. The service was friendly and pretty fast for being cooked after I ordered and the portions were very generous. Unfortunately the food was really bland and kind of generic. The chow mein tasted bland and the only real flavor was the faint taste of the white pepper and the slight sweetness of the bbq pork. The chicken was good, but lacked zest. Two dishes with a side of rice for about $15. If the food was really good, I would say this was a great deal, but since it didn't really seem much better than Panda Express (which I don't really like), it seemed a little much. Even so, I did have enough left over for a full lunch the next day. I'm a big fan of Chinese food, but it's tough to find the good stuff for a reasonable price in San Diego. entrees run from $6.99-10.99 \r \r

Awesome Chinese Food

I never know what to order at a chinese resturant because there doesn't seem to be any consistency from one place to the next. I have lived in North Park and never eaten at this place. I found it by doing a google search and was seriously in the mood for some chinese food. I did not want a .99 cent-type place. I walked in and it looks like any other carry-out/dine in chinese resturant. The girl behind the counter was very friendly and helped me order. She asked me what I liked and recommended the Garlic Chicken. I took her advise and ordered that, won-ton soup and 2 egg rolls (which are actually what us east coast people call spring rolls. you just can't get east coast egg rolls in CA). She noticed I was riding my motorcycle and saw that that the food was going in a backpack so she packaged it up very neatly and accordingly. I got home and ate immediately and was pleasantly surprised. It was absolutely delicious. Just the right amount of spicy. I couldn't have been more pleased. I almost called the place to tell them how pleased I was, but I decided to simply just continue to go there and that would be thanks enough. It is the best place I have eaten at on the west coast PERIOD. If you read this review and don't go there, you are definately missing out. Just try them and I am confident that you will agree.

Great Chinese

I am originally from the east coast that by far has much better chinese food than out here on the west. But while I was living in San Diego I had come to find something that is very comparable to east coast chinese food. I don't remember how I found this place but I do have to say that they have had my undying loyalty since i first ate there. I now live in LA and every time I go to SD I always pass by here. The service is very good and the food matches it. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone.

I'm usually skeptical when entering Chinese food restaurants that are in odd locations, but I'm sure glad I did this time. Located in between a Kragen Autoparts store and a Little Ceases Pizza on El Cajon Blvd, I wasn't expecting to be impressed. But, after a long Saturday spent working on my project car, I found myself in a situation many of us find ourselves in... Take a shower and get dressed to go get something decent to eat OR remain dirty and grab a cheap 5 dollar pizza? I sat in my car and weighed the options heavily. Then, like a bolt of lightning, I noticed Maxim's Chinese Palace right in front of me.\r \r There one common denominator in all ""oddly located Chinese food restaurants"" that I've noticed in my years and that is the decor. Or complete lack of it. I'm not a pretentious eater, but I do tend to notice things about restaurants that drive me nuts.\r \r 1) I don't want to see your kitchen and I don't want to see your supplies stored in the dining area.\r \r 2) Foreign faded beer advertisement posters from the mid-1980's that are framed as impressive works of art.\r \r 3) Giant fish tanks that have no gravel or fake plants but have massive fish floating in green tinted water that look bored beyond belief.\r \r Unfortunately, this place has that all. So I can honestly tell you that I wasn't expecting anything to change my opinion on the place. I ordered my food at the counter to take home, I wasn't about to be having dinner there while that creepy fish stared at me! The girl behind the counter was sweet and very pleasant. I had a seat to wait for my food and watched as various customers came in and picked up their phoned in orders. I was amazed by the fact that nobody had to give their name to get their food. It seemed as if the girl behind the counter had known everybody for years!\r \r I got home and devoured the absolute best Chicken Chow Mein I've ever had!!! \r \r Now when I pick up an order, I don't have to give my name anymore...\r
