Our family went here during Memorial Day weekend for a late Sunday night dinner. There was no wait and we were quickly seated. The service was friendly and fast. \r Positives: kid friendly, great candy shop nearby, decent food, fast service, no wait, good atmosphere\r \r Negatives: tables too close together, hard to get in and out without bumping other people's chairs, the supposedly featured live entertainment was non-existent - we didn't see them once, tortillas were a bit tough, the kid's menu very limited and mostly fried food, margaritas did not wow.\r \r Again, the restaurant really needs to list healthy choices on the kids menu. The chicken nuggets we ordered were tiny pieces of fried chicken, in fact - so tiny it was hard to find the chicken among all the fried stuff on top. Not healthy at all. Otherwise, good place in good location.
I went there on my recent trip to San Diego. I went past it before and decided to give it a try. The food was good and the tortilas were great. I didn't mind the marichi music, sure it could have been better. I have found there is no real authentic mexican food unless you eat the same food as the mexicans eat. This was better than alot of places I have been. It was a good choice for me when I visited Old Town.

We just had dinner there tonight -- to end our week long trip to SD. What a disappointment. Guess our expectations were too high. We have a better restaurant in Cleveland for Mexican restaurant than this place. First - our server was pathetically slow. He never brought the tortillas for the dinner -- and when we finally asked -- he was shocked we didn't have them -- like he had brought them already. Our drinks were empty for at last 10 minutes until we had to ask for refills. My meal had good flavor -- pretty skimpy on the sour cream. My husband got faijtas-- I have never seen such a small portion in any restaurant we've ever been to. And --the tortillas when we finally got them tasted like flour. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone -- and we will not be back. I hope there are better places in SD for Mexican because this one is really not worth the effort.
Listen to the music before you sit down. They were on a break when we went there. We were seated & ordering when the Mariachis came back. I'm a San Diego native, & this was the worst Mariachi music I've ever heard. I never ate so fast in my life. The music was off key both singing and guitar. Parking underground was good. Food was adequate at best. This is not worthy of a repeat.

While the food was great i had a problem with the tip being written in by someone after the fact. When i complained to the manager i was basically told i was a liar. As a result of this I have recommended my company no longer do business here. I would suggest if you tip in cash to note that on the reciept. manager cares more about 10 dollars than the lost business it would seem.

Of all the Mexican places I have eaten in San Diego, this one wasn't too bad. After all this time, I am still surprised how hard it is to find a sit down type of Mexican restaurant in this town, that has good food. There are plenty of smaller eatery type places, but hardly any dining. At any rate, the chips were decent, the salsa was pretty good. The Margarita had good flavor and didn't seem to skimp on the alcohol. I had the grande burrito, suprema style...The meat was good, not too chewy or stringy, but I especially like the rice and beans that went with it. The service was great, the decor OK, but the location could be fun with a bit warmer weather.

I took my family here about two weeks ago.\r \r Normally I find some of the restaurants in Old Town are too tourisy and the food tastes cheap.\r \r Cafe Coyote doesn't feel that cheap to me or touristy. The tortillas are fresh probably since the have people our front making them. I order the Carne Asada and it was wonderful.\r \r The ambiance was great and the staff was awesome. It felt like I was in a real authentic mexican food restaurant south of hte border. They were really nice to my kids. They brought some color paper and candy from their candy store. It's very nice and I recommend you take your family.

This restaurant has it all. Great food ( the tortillas are freshly made on a grill out on the patio), the best in sevice and very reasonably priced. The ambience is wonderful whether you sit inside the restaurant or in one of the outside patio areas. We have had a number of items on their menu and have never been disappointed. The Queso Fundido is always a must served with hot tortillas. \r The margaritas are swimming pool sized drinks guaranteed to make any occasion a FIESTA.\r The seating outside on the patios enables you to soak up the pleasant San Diego weather and enjoy the activity in Old San Diego from a streetside location. Sparrows that flit around the patios just add to that festive feeling.\r We always make the Coyote a stop when in San Diego!
