My comments relate to the physical facilities, not the professional services, which are too early to comment on. For the kind of money Aurora is getting for each patient, I think the facilities are shockingly subpar. For instance in the AWOL wing there is no comfortable place for visitors to meet privately. A patient here is unable to exercise. 'recreation' consists of coloring with crayons. The facilities are worn and in need of major renovation as well as housecleaning. Patients cannot go outside except once an hour when they are allowed to smoke on a small concrete fenced area. If someone just wants to go outside for the warmth of the sun and some peace with nature, they are out of luck. Even the picnic bench outside has a bench on one side only, so you can't sit across from another person. Very uncomfortable for visitors. We had to stand outside. It is like a prison. While I understand the need for security due to flight risk, nontheless that does not excuse the shabby rooms and visiting space, the cheap furniture, the uncomfortable flow of the place. They should budget for an interior designer/architect who rethinks the space. A better flow and ambiance would do much for the patients here. There is no reason to have cheap motel 6 furnishings. The wing has all the charm of a free clinic. A pleasant atmosphere is positive for those suffering from depression, as does exercise. It is well known that exercise can be as effective as drugs when it comes to counteracting depression. They should allow for some sort of exercise. Even prisons provide for this.
My daughter was brought in at 7:15 am on sat. It's Monday, 3:10pm and I still haven't heard from a dr. Was asked about her dietary needs during brief intake call. I advised them on foods she cant eat. Was assured a special meal would be made. Didn't happen yet. She eats the food she can't, or goes hungry. Every time I call they assure me a nurse will call me back. Never happens. Was told they can keep her 3 days (for drunk in public) and told dr wants to keep her, but won't say why. I asked (again) to TALK to a dr and was told she's seeing a clinical psychologist and they usually talk to her assigned dr so that the assigned dr can talk to me...even though he's never met her. I said I wanted to talk to dr who has met with her. I was assured I would...still waiting. I was asked to voluntarily admit her for a longer period but not told why. They send kids to a "quiet room" (solitary). I told the intake lady my daughter had secure anxiety and insomnia. Asked them to even give over the counter meds. There's no tv, no outside, no movies, and she gets to go to bed at 8am. Not exactly helping her to just sit, and sit, and sit, and sit all day & night. Even visiting was a fiasco?. Sign in, no ID check and the guy was on his phone so he waved us though but we had no Idea where to go. ended up in adult psych ward. just got another call saying I need to do admitting paperwork when we go to take her home. Ok. Also asked again to voluntarily leave her (I'm not) and now told dr can hold her another 3 days, but it's unlikely. I'm just waiting for the bill. Some staff(Andrea, Regina, Bri) were very nice. All were helpful. I just always have to hunt down answers. Never told what the program was, what to expect, rules, legal rights...again, brought in at 7:15, after hours of calling for info I was told to call at 10:00....unvaccinated and frustrated. The web site is NOT correct.

My daughter has been to this place twice. This is a prison sentence not a place for them to feel better about themselves. I do understand the need for security. I do not understand them taking her off of medications without any consultation with her regular psych Dr or, even a phone call to home to ask permission on what psychotic meds you are giving my child? Unacceptable! Shame on you Aurora!!!

It was a frightening experience. We went for outpatient help for our son who was mildly depressed. They basically held him prisoner using a 5150 on a very liberal interpretation of the law. We fought to have him released with no luck. For 24 hours of captivity, he was ignored and received no help. He was completely sober when he went yet they still tried to dope him up on detox medication. To make it worse, they charged our credit card $3500 + $300 for a 5 minute doctor visit. Stay Away From Aurora!!!
