If we paid full price, I probably would have docked another tar. The web ite we booked through had thi room li ted a $165 per night over the memorial day weekend. We jumped on it being that mo t other downtown hotel were upward of $200 for the holiday. My bu ine partn...moreer and I pent Thur & Fri night there with not too many complaint . However, after reading a few review on a couple ite , I till am un ure why they don't in tall full hower door . The entire bathroom i tiled. Toilet and hower are eparated by a gla partition. The partition doe nt fully tretch the length of the hower, o the water tend to pla h out. IMO, if it wa n't po ible to in tall an entire gla door, hower curtain would have ufficed. The witch to the re troom light i to the right of the main door, however the re troom it elf i to the left. The bathroom ink i to the right a oon a you walk into the room. My one other complaint i the parking fee . When booking online, it fir t appeared we would be able to pay an \"overnight flat fee\" of $10. Once we arrived, we noticed that the $10 flat fee i only good until 2am. If your tay doe n't include crui ing downtown treet during the witching hour , you actually have to pay $30 for 24 hour of parking. You can elf park to get that rate, or you can u e valet--it come out to the ame $30. We opted to elf park ince we were not too ure how long it would take for valet to retrieve the car. We were in town for bu ine , o there wa not a lot of free time to dawdle. There are a good amount of pro to thi hotel. The view from the third floor of Downtown San Diego i beautiful both during day and night. The cheape t food option we found within walking di tance wa Wendy' and a fre h baked large pizza from 7-11. They have 3 different HBO channel . If you don't want to u e wifi, they do provide an ethernet cable for internet connection, which I appreciate. They provide 2 water bottle per day a well a coffee, both regular and decaf. Their fitne center i open 24 hr , although I wa not able to u e it. Mo t of the taff wa really friendly. The maid came to clean when we were till in the room, o we ent her away. Before he left, he made ure we had all the upplie we needed...toilet paper, water, hampoo, etc. One of the valet guy threw dirty look , but whatev. If Hotel Tonight ha another pecial on thi hotel, we might ju t tay again. If you do download the hotel tonight app, make ure you u e promo code \" Saenz3\" to get $25 off your fir t booking. Every little bit help ! Safe travel everyone... Thi area i mo tly one way treet , o let me offer mall tip. When outhbound on Front St, look for parking on the left ide ju t a you pa C treet. If you pa it, you can till pull over in front of the hotel for valet. If you're determined to elf park, turn left on Broadway (Broadway run both way ), and left again on fir t. The fir t parking lot on the left ide i for the Sofia. Parking permit machine goe to leep after inactivity, o if it look off, ju t hit a button to wake it up. It accept both ca h and credit. view less

Clean and Convenient

Found thi hotel on one of the popular travel Web ite after deciding to drive down to SD for the annual Celebrate Dance Fe tival in Balboa Park. My friend and I were looking for omething affordable and convenient, and the Hotel Occidental fit the bill. I'd found and taye...mored in a imilar \"European tyled\" hotel about a year ago and had a great experience there, o I wa hoping that thi one would not di appoint. The e type of hotel u ually have maller room with eparate toilet and hower facilitie which allow them to offer lower rate . We paid ju t under $200 for two night for two twin bed plu a kitchenette (di he , fridge and a microwave) and an in-room toilet, with extra like free wirele acce , a combo TV/DVD, a ba ket of u eful goodie (bottled water, microwave popcorn, in tant coffee, tea, etc) a tack of fre h towel and plenty of room to put away our clothe for the weekend in an open helf-clo et combo. Many of the furni hing were minimali t Ikea- tyled modular, but mo tly comfortable. Thi room wa a bit more terile than other I've tayed in, in that there wa no wall art or other touche of \"home,\" but eeing a we didn't pend a heck of a lot of time in the room but for leeping, I wa OK with that. They al o made up for that lack of homine in the room by creating a welcoming atmo phere in the common area - fre h fruit and a tempting candy bowl were kept full in the lobby, and at night, gue t came \"home\" to a dimly lit lobby accentuated by candlelight - truly a nice touch. The hotel al o offered a complementary breakfa t which wa mo tly fre h and included juice, coffee and an a ortment of dani h and breakfa t roll . Between that and the mall kitchenette, we aved a bunch of money on eating out. Al o, though mall, the hower facilitie were quite clean and well maintained. The only con I have to note i parking - the hotel ha a tiny, gated lot that can fit about four car . However, we were lucky to find non-metered pace on the treet while there, and parking at meter i free on Sunday . Al o, the neighborhood i a bit ketchy at night. Still we afely walked down 'G\" treet to the Ga lamp di trict and took a cab back. There' a liquor tore on an adjacent corner that attract the u ual clientele for that type of e tabli hment, along with a \"lounge\" next door. However, tho e element didn't freak u out a much a the pre ence of HUGE \"water bug \" boldly walking along the treet but no where near or in our living quarter , thankfully! All in all a nice tay e pecially for a quick weekend getaway!view less

Decent hotel for the rate you...

Decent hotel for the rate you get A trip to San Diego had been on the card for a very long time, but the budget alway po ed a con traint. Accommodation in a good San Diego hotel co t a fair amount of money and o we were waiting to find the be t rate . A friend ugge ...moreted California Suite Hotel and we checked out the rate . Ju t the kind we were looking for. Now you can't expect the moon when you are looking for a bargain. But we were plea antly urpri ed to ee the complimentary breakfa t, which wa quite fre h, nothing lavi h. Be ide , they have a pretty big wimming pool, that wa definitely a bonu . About the re t, we got decent room , nothing fancy, but ok. The taff wa a little laid back, but that' not urpri ing in a budget hotel. One great thing about thi hotel i it location, pitched right in the center of the city. So we could imply hop over to the San Diego' be t touri t pot without pending a bomb on commute. All aid and done, it a nice enough affordable hotel with the be t rate , that offer ome good di count too! You get to have a good time well within your budget. Next time we go to San Diego, we plan to tay in thi hotel again. I think that ay it all! view less
