History
Since 1955, Banfield veterinarians have been providing the highest standard of preventive pet healthcare, medical treatment, dental care and veterinary surgery.
Dr. Warren J. Wegert’s single veterinary practice in Portland has grown into more than 800 hospitals, most of which are conveniently located inside PetSmart® stores nationwide.
Each hospital delivers on Dr. Wegert’s vision to provide accessible, best-in-class pet care, such as, investing in the most up-to-date equipment; establishing industry-leading anesthesia protocols and innovating Optimum Wellness Plans.
But make no mistake—our national size has never diluted our local sensibility. Our first priority will never change: to be your partner, and give you every resource we have to ensure your pets stay a happy and healthy part of your family, for as long as possible.

This hospital was the best price I found ANYWHERE(in the bay area) for a dental cleaning on my dog. It was around 220$ which I have spent THOUSANDS in the past for a simply dental cleaning. \r \r The staff is super friendly and the doctor was amazing with explaining everything step by step. Their dog/cat plans they have can save you a lot of money on health care for your pet and I will be getting my dogs started on those plans in the next few weeks. The staff even called me the next morning to check in on my little guy! Best service I have had in a long time that seems like they really care. Two Thumbs Up!
The Good:
Banfield has good hours, and will allow you to drop off your pet before work & pick up after work. This is very convenient.
The Bad:
Banfield sells a monthly "wellness plan" which they try to portray as health insurance for your pet, but it only covers preventive treatments (vaccines & checkup). Every time I get my bill I need to look it over thoroughly because they will often add things you do not need. They WILL nickel & dime you every little thing. Do not expect to just pay the monthly fee & not have to worry about any other pet health expenses, there is ALWAYS something else on the bill.
The Ugly:
Banfield has the worst turn-over I've ever seen; average vet tenure must be like 6 months... When we started at Banfield we had a great vet who really seemed to care about our dogs and was easy to talk to. But she left and now we see a new vet basically every visit. The techs are the same way, always new faces. It's really frustrating having to explain my older dog's conditions anew EVERY time I bring him in. You'd think they would have his file available and read it before they start recommending treatment options, but they want to run the same tests every visit (very expensive testing..hmmmm). I suspect Banfield hires only very green vets and don't pay them well, because this is also the case at the San Mateo Banfield.
