Let me tell you about a place that's won my endless love: Lisa's Mexican Restaurant on Bandera Road. The space—soothing, modern and inviting. Warm, saturated jewel tones and walls bursting with bold original artwork by Brother Cletus set the stage for memorable food. Lisa's pays homage to both Mexican and Tex-Mex. Comida estilo casero is elevated to exemplary status thanks to beautifully executed recipes, fresh ingredients and a respectful nod to tradition. The menu features interior Mexican classics like Rajas con Crema. Roasted poblano pepper strips and sauteed onions swim in a silky, rich cream sauce. Lisa's sopes are the best I've had in Texas- fresh masa patties with a discreet slather of bacony refrieds. One topped with earthy, piquant cubes of lean pork in perfect salsa roja, the other crowned with richly spiced papas with fresh chorizo. Both garnished with crisp lettuce, finished with queso fresco and drizzled with Mexican crema. I felt "en casa". I also fell in love with Lisa's two excellent salsas- a vibrant, playful tomato serrano, or a rich, roasted jalapeño, onion and tomato number with slow, lingering burn. Spinach enchiladas are benchmark. These espinacas are clean, vibrant and luxuriously draped in cream, sided with veggies and excellent, fluffy white rice. Classic Tex-Mex enchiladas sing, and San Antonians voted the cheese enchiladas "best in town". Lisa's borracho beans get bacon, fresh pico de gallo, beer and respect. Yes indeed, because the beans remain tender and whole at once, the broth eminently slurpable. These frijoles were also named "best in San Antonio". Pescado a la Veracruzana is lovely. The sauce, a well-balanced, complimentary blend of tomatoes, olives, peppers and spices doesn't overwhelm the mild fish fillets. Tacos al pastor get an achiote marinade for a "toque yucateco," rich, flavorful and alive with fresh cilantro, cebolla and pineapple. I was almost at the corner taquería in the DF, standing at an angle and biting my way to taco callejero heaven. Oh, and the corn tortillas. The flour are righteous, but the corn...oh my Aztec gods. Hand made, light, tender- hechas a mano. Great corn tortillas are hard to find in San Antonio, flour tortilla kingdom. Attention to craft and authenticity are the norm here. Go to Lisa's. Eat your way thru the menu. Enjoy the attentive, warm service. Be a discerning Mex-Tex lover. The server told me many of the regulars are fixtures- they eat here five and six times a week. I smiled, not one bit surprised. I understood. I'm one of them now.
I have visited this location for dinner several times but this last visit was the first time I have ever ordered dessert. I ordered their dessert minis which are strawberry cheesecake, key lime pie, and chocolate trifle. I ordered one of each and thought they were very cute when the waitress brought them out. They were all lined up in shot glass like dishes with the spoon sticking straight out. For being so small they defiantly got your attention. The Cheesecake was probably my favorite, it was nice and creamy and had a wonderful flavor in the graham cracker crust and paired with the strawberries was very delicious. It was also a nice alternative to the traditional presentation of cheesecake. The key lime pie i didn't like so much though. The flavor of the key lime was pretty spot on it was just the crust that made the dessert not what it could have been. The crust tasted as if it could have been frozen and then thawed out or like a stale vanilla wafer cookie crumble. The chocolate trifle would have been my favorite since it was for sure made for a chocolate lover like myself but the mousse that was layered in between the cake was a one-note item. It had great texture but that was about all you got from it, it needed some added flavor like a liquor or a coffee or hazelnut or something to give it something special. The chocolate cake that was in it though was very good and my favorite part of that dessert it was light and moist and had just the right amount of chocolate flavor. One thing about the cheesecake and key lime that i didn't like was the whipped cream. It tasted like it came from a can and a bit oily it was not anything like a fresh whipped cream so that is one thing i would definitely change. I had a overall great experience and minus the few set backs in the desserts i did really enjoy them. I would just suggest a few alterations and then i would most defiantly order them again.
Jacala is probably one of the best-kept secrets in San Antonio's Mexican food scene. Located in an out-of-the-way West Avenue eatery, it's been in business since 1949. I've been eating there at least that long. When I have out-of-town guests that the first place we go. Their food is true Tex-Mex, and they're noted for their "puffy tacos" ( a mouth-watering conncoction of specially spiced beef and hand-tossed tortillas). But the 'coup de grace' is their Cheese Enchilada plate. Smothered in Jacala's signature chili (the tasty variety, not the super-hot type), Jacala's Enchilladas are 'to die for'. If you want to return to tell your friends that you've had the very best Mexican foot money can buy, tell your waiter you want a Number 3 plate (their most popular). For the lesser appetite, try the 'Lady's Special', or the identical 'Macho's Special'. Wash it all down with a Especial Maragarita, and you can truly go back having eaten the 'real thing'! As to the service; it's incomparable! Richard (now in his 70s, has been with Jacala since he was 18 years old. Hi protogee', Miguel, has been there at least 25 years. Guera (pronounced Wera) has been there at least as long as Miguel and runs the second tier of restaurant help with a professional touch. Want to show your sophistication? Try to find the well-hidden face of Jesus in the mural along the rear wall. As a hint: It's located in the trees where the 'Rosita Bridge' crosses the San Antonio River. A further hint: It's on the right hand side of the bridge. -0-
When you first walk in you will be welcomed by the hostess who will direct you to your table and tell you who your server will be. In my case, Joel. =) The service is personal and you can expect to be asked how your meal is and how your day is going multiple times. The manager was just as friendly as the team he has. You can definitely keep snacking on the the chips and salsa as they are as superb as the sweet tea (garnished with lime) and enjoy the conversation of your company. The food is delectable. By far the best rice, beans and flour tortillas on the northside. The cheese enchiladas are mouth watering topped with their signature enchilada and chile con carne sauce. The flautas are light and crispy. They are filled and you are guaranteed a mouthful of tender chicken in every bite. This is truly a restaurant where the portions are just right or you might even find yourself saying "I ran out of food!" The atmosphere is perfect for the restaurant. You will find yourself dancing and even swaying to the tejano, amongst other types of latin music. The restrooms as well as the restaurant in general is immaculate both inside and out. This is crucial to me.... It was lunch time. A margarita seals the deal as a great before or after beverage. Did I mention the happy hour?
Seriously,I don't write reviews very often. I signed up today just to write this review. This is my favorite restaurant. I'm a person who eats out about 90% of the time along with my wife. I frequent this place at least five time a week between breakfast and lunch. They have the best breakfast tacos in town that I know of & are always reasonably priced just like their $5.99 lunch specials which includes Tea or COKE products! And is available till 5 PM! Nowhere I know of has specials available that late! I am a big a boy and I leave full all time! While the Mexican food here is my favorite. The overall best thing about this restaurant is the service from the people who work here. They're always very nice and inviting. When they use to be open till 2:30 p.m. At times I'd come in there 10 minutes before close and they would always still be very genuinely nice and inviting. Which remind also reminds me, they're always fast, SUPER FAST! And these is the reason I love this place! Please support them and go try it out you won't regret it! If you are looking for a comfortable place to let your hair down and have fun on a budget, look no further. The food is fabulous and plentiful, the drinks are good and affordable and the atmosphere is lively and feels like home. You will almost always find one of the three daughters (now the owners) or the grand-daughter walking around making sure the patrons are happy!! They truly want you to feel at home. Jacala has been serving three and four generations of loyal customers since the inception of their business in 1949. The original owner, Rudy Quinones created his own flair of recipes from his childhood memories of his hispanic family growing up in Oklahoma. It doesn't get anymore Tex/Mex than that! You cannot find another enchilada or puffy taco any where in the world that tastes like Jacala. I know, because I have traveled the world trying to find something that came a little close.........never happened. So....if you are looking for a place to have fun, meet with friends, have a party, reception or just a romantic evening, you will love this place......and you might even see a celebrity or two.
In an era of cutting corners and passing along the bill to the customers, its great to know that their are restaurant owners who still care about the community they are a part of. The staff at Tresca are proud of their ellegant spot in the Plaza at Concord on Sonterra. The hostess explained to us that tresca meant "a love affair." And that the owners indeed have a love for the city they are part of. All of the art is local, and the food is exceptionally fresh crisp and tasty. The server informed us that Tresca is commited to using friendly farm meats and organic veggies. The wine list is extensive yet not over priced and if your group has varied tastes you can order bt the caraffe, glass, bottle, or just a splash. I thought this offering was unique and perfect for diners in this area. I love trying different wines, and it is obvious that Tresca has designed their wine menu with their guests in mind. The service was the best Ive had in quite a while. When it came time to move between courses, it felt as if the entire staff made our group the priority! Thank you and we will be back soon.
New Product Line is a Big Hit! Using Taco Cabana's (TC's) own website for “feedback”, I previously scorched TC for the extreme lack of customer service at this location. Management has since corrected the issues with new personnel who are highly courteous and fast. More importantly, since my feedback TC has done something that is extremely hard to do successfully - they revamped TC's product line to the point that my family considers TC to be the fast-food restaurant of first choice. The new products include (1) high quality "chicken flautas" with all the condiments, (2) beef "street tacos" and the real surprise that we eat for breakfast or dinner, (3) chopped "brisket tacos" on corn tortilla (corn is our particular preference). It is rare that the consecutive unrolling of new products are home runs! Great job TC management!! Now, if you can only get your beef fajitas back to backyard BBQ quality that TC was originally known for, TC would own the fast-food market!
I have been to Pat O's many times for lunch and hurricanes and always have had a great time. Lately I have not been going out because San Antonio Bars are all the same. Meat markets with guys trying to grab you in places they should'nt. Tonight I was downtown with my girls and we ended up on the patio listening to an acoustic band jamming and drinking Yup you guessed it Hurricanes. I went to the ladies room and discovered a stairwell going up with people making their way up there. I followed a couple and ended up in a bar that reminded me of a place I went last winter in Berlin. OMG. it was amazing! I totally forgot about my friends and got lost in the middle of a packed sweaty dancefloor. The Dj was playing the most amazing techno I have ever heard in San Antonio much less the United States and the Bass just grabbed a hold of me and moved me all night. My girls ended up finding me and we had the time of our life! Forget all the other clubs in the city and go there. I promise you will have a blast!
I recently met up with an old friend who was in town for a convention at Paloma for lunch and really had a very pleasant experience. I work downtown but don't really venture very far from the office. The Host (Charlie) was very friendly and unassuming and we were greeted and seated in a timely manner on the outside patio with a great view of the River and people walking along it. Our server was quick to offer up the specials of the day while taking our drink orders. He promptly returned with our drinks and some warm and crunchy chips and some of the best salsa I've ever had! (Addictive) My choice for the Carne Asada was a good one. The portion was generous and it was very tender and cooked to order. Everything was really good, the enchilada, the rice, and the beans. Again, the salsa was addictive; I think we finished the portion twice! I will definitely be making a return trip to Paloma in the very near future!
