Me and my wife ate here about a year ago and the food was great and so was the service I even saw the owner helping taking plates out to the tables but we went again last night and it was horrible...Besides us, there were about 2 other families there so I was thinking the food would be extra good and fast, but it all started when I saw nothing but young guys that look to be in highschool running the place last nite,they getting ready to close a hour early the chips were all smashed and not one whole one was in the bowl my wife ordered a piña colada that tasted like a cream slush with no alcohol the half order of nachos came out and for almost 6 bucks it was 6 individual chips with cheese beans little beef and a jalapeño on top (I guess a $1 each chip) the food was quick but the fajita meat in my enchiladas was dry and the rice was hard and crispy and tortillas were stiff, I don't think I will be back again I hate to say but chachos would of been a better experience on a Friday night and you know how that is!!!!
I agree. Run, don't walk. The lunch menu is to die for and fast. I never pass up the chance to have lunch there. Sundays mean Picante Grill and family dinner after church. There is a new item, well two new items, on the menu. One is chocolate, need I say more? It's Mexican chocolate and gluten free. The mango tart is wonderful and melts in the mouth. Mmmmm. Now I'm hungry! Got to get there in time for lunch and chocolate!
I have been going to Picante since they opened and have stopped going to most other Mexican food places. <br> <br>At Picante you are treated like family. Every experience feels like a meal with family and friends. The service is friendly and professional as are the owners. <br> <br>I have tried every item on the menu and some that are in the works for the next menu. I am constantly surprised by the depth of the flavors and the combinations of ingredients. The plating and presentation are exquisite. The variety of items available keeps me coming back at least twice a week to get reintroduced to each of the dishes. <br> <br>I recommend Picante for small and large dinners of all kinds, parties, buffets, catering, the new bar in the back for drinks and dates, and even for take-out. I enjoy every moment spent in this establishment!
I knew we should have left when we went into the ladies bathroom and the 4 little girls in there wouldnt go into one of the stalls because of the (it wont allow me to write a word that sounds like poaches) then my friend saw a couple of dead ones on the window sill. The food was ok but not nearly good enough for what they charge for it and not nearly enough food for the cost. We ordered fajitas and two kids cheese enchiladas and paid almost $50. They charge $1 for a very small condiment dish of watery sour cream which usually comes with fajitas, $1.50 for the same size dish of shredded cheese, neither is enough for even two fajitas. Both of the kids enchilada plates had refried beans the serving size of a .50 piece so we had to ask for more, $1.50 for you got it, a serving in the same small dishes that the sour cream & cheese came in so I told him they were not full and we would need more because neither of the girls liked the enchiladas and were filling up on beans, so they bring out a dish of beans in a bowl the size of a kids fist and charge $3.00 When we got tired of the grizzle in the fajita meat, watery sour cream & looking at dead poaches, I asked for the check and was dumbfounded. I asked our waiter about the charges so he went to get the manager who was automatically on defensive so you could tell it was something that they deal with on a continuous basis. Well, if you would serve food that deserves the prices, you dont have to be defensive. I for one do not mind spending $50 or more on great real mexican food, I do it all of the time but this place is a joke and one of the dirtiest, worst tasting food places I have ever eaten at & I even love small hole in the wall places, the bigger nicer places and any & everything imbetween everywhere I travel. After speaking with several people around San Antonio (unfortunately too late) and a couple of friends from here, they all gave very similar stories to mine. Maybe it was a bad night for them but again with about 10 people telling me the same thing, I dont think it was a single occurance. Choose wisely, you would be better off waiting to get into the mexican place down on the Riverwalk for an hour then going straight in this place. Which should have been another clue, great food usually causes a stir at 7ish on weekend and this place was dead except one graduation party that clearly waited to long to book any other place. \r <br>\r <br>\r <br>\r
My husband & I went for our 42nd Wedding Anniversary to Picante Grill because of an article in the Express News about the wonderful enchiladas, which are my favorite!. We went on a Thursday evening. The atmosphere was nice; the waitress was nice!
<br>My first Margarita had NO tequila in it. Since I don't drink much I wasn't sure, so I didn't say anything! I ordered another - watched her make it - she dipped a pitcher in a bucket (to get the mix) and did pour tequila in it this time!

<br>My enchiladas were COLD! I don't mean just warm - I mean very cold; like they just came out of a refrigerator. Again, I didn't say anything except to my husband. Since I was the one that suggested we go there; he didn't have much to say.
<br>My husband doesn't especially care for Mexican food anyway; so we left a decent tip, went home, and will not return.
I absolutely LOVE this place! I think I've gone through the entire menu, with my favorites being their two lamb dishes and duck breast dist (try to find lamb or duck at another Mexican restaurant in town!) but also love their ""mixed grill"" which is a shiskabob of shrimp, beef and chicken. As others have mentioned, their waitstaff are very professional and friendly, and their side dishes of beans and rice are worth the extra calories and carbs! I usually leave them on the plate at OTHER Mexican Restaurants, but not here! The last time my husband and I were there it was a bit off...food lukewarm and not as fresh-tasting as usual, but it was an odd time (between lunch and dinner) on a Saturday, so I'll forgive them, and go back as soon as I can. Oh, and the Chico platter is great for the best ""traditional"" Mexican food around. Right across from the Whitte, it's very convenient and fun. Atmosphere is usually calm and restful, their sangria is very tasty, and while the wait time from order to table is sometimes a little long, it is SO worth the wait. Enjoy.
This restaurant is part of the famed 'Mi Tierra' family (which I admit I haven't been to in years due to the long wait times) and its proximity to downtown and great food quality make it a good choice for birthdays, anniversaries, etc.
After hearing about the excellent comments of a friend of mine, we all decided to go and I was convinced that Picante Grill was HOT. Definitely one of the best enchiladas and fajitas my family and I have tried!! Especially the borracho beans that come with the sizzling 1/2 pound of beef and chicken fajita was incredible. The food is not only outstanding but also the service with a wonderful crew of waiters and waitresses. I would highly reccomend this place which by the way has a beautiful decoration on the inside.
The restaurant has a good crowd, mostly nearby locals. The guitar player was a delight to hear. I'm not much for spicy food so I could not handle the picante salsa served with chips. I'd recommend it for people who like it >. The meal started off with ceviche , seviche?. It tasted like it had ketchup in it? It was different and tastey though. The entree was a 1/2 pound mix of chicken and beef fajita's with boraccho beans, spanish rice, guacamole/salsa mix and a side of tortillas. The meat was tender and tasted pretty good. I would recommend more onions and peppers in the presentation of the hot plate. I shared my meal with a dining companion. I'd return with friends but try something different. It's a nice restaurant with friendly staff and management.
