Since now under new ownership and management this place just keeps getting better. The Hot and Sour Soup is fantastic. Family favorites are Imperial Shrimp and Sweet and Sour Pork or Chicken. The ""sweet"" tea has just a hint of jasmine and is sooooo good even my husband (who usually does NOT like flavored tea) drinks more than one glass. I have had three different wait-persons and all have been knowledgeable of the food and prompt and courteous in service. I eat in the restaurant or get take-away once a week--it is that good.

August 1st will be the one year anniversary that Charles has taken over the ownership of House of Joy. If you haven't been there before or if you used to be a customer years ago be sure to make it one of your stops. The new owner used to work at the restuarant and is now the owner! What an improvement there has been. The food is wonderful and the hot and sour soup is the best in SA. He has improved the interior of the facility and it is first class. We enjoy going back there for lunch or dinner. Give it a try!

The new management at House of Joy's attention to detail is second to none. He treats each customer special and comes by your table several times while you're there. The food is scrumptious, fresh, and tasty. Portion sizes are large and priced fairly. Check it out if you haven't visited lately.

Great Food!!Great Service\r \r I have been going to House of Joy since the middle 90's and the food and service has been very good for years. Recently went by and I notice a familiar face who now runs House of Joy. He has the place looking even better and according to him service will be taken to new heights. If you haven't been by lately stop and try it again. You won't be dissapointed with this local eatery!
Disappointed in the food considering the price service below average and waited long time for take out . Also the food was cold and giving me the wrong order.

We order takeout from here regularly cuz it's in the neighborhood. Good food, good price, good proportions. Great choices on lunch combos. Haven't been disappointed in years. [It is obvious that the reviews listed here from 8/25/06, 10/06/06, and 11/03/06 are all the same person, and as that person didn't likely come back three times, s/he shouldn't be allowed three reviews. Never saw anybody spitting on the floor or sticking fingers in the food over the past eight years...and this place has been in business here a long time with continual repeat business.] Just sayin'.

House of Joy has absolutely the best chinese food in down. my mouth waters just thinking about the wonton soup. They have awesome deals and they give you a lot for your money. i go in al the time, so much that the waitresses already know what i want. haha they sit me and ask whoever is with me what they want because she already knows my order:) The little man in the front that yells a lot is very nice you just need to warm up to him. i thought he was rude at first but now my mind has changed you people are crazy.

My family and I were eating here at lunch one day when the person next to us told the waitress the food was cold. as the waitress walked away with the food we witnessed her stick her finger in the rice to check as if her finger were a thermometer. \r On this second occassion, we went for lunch and the food was cold. we sent it back and were treated rudely. when the food came back it had no flavor, the lady told us we had to use a sauce in order to add flavor. i told her i did not want it, she made a big scene adding that since i had ate the egg roll and ate the soup i would have to pay for it. i told her i didnt have a problem with that but that their customer service were very bad. she said she didnt care and that i just needed to pay. she made a very big scene for a little over 3 dollars. These owners are rude, their food sucks and has gotten worse as the years go by. I will never step foot in there again especially since I have witnessed first hand that they stick their fingers in the food. disgusting!

The food here is the best that I've had in San Antonio. Service is fast and the food is always ready for me to pick up. This place has been around for over 15 years, and there's a reason why they're still in business. I go ga-ga for the hot and sour soup. It takes some time to warm up to the manager, but he's a good guy.

I have been going to House of Joy for many years. When my family or I walk in the manager lights up and sets us happily. We have been going there so long they treat us like family. I love this restruant not only because it has one of my favorite meals but also they treat me like family.

I ordered my food like a had always done the past couple times i visited. Beef fried rice WELL DONE. I specifically asked VERY, VERY WELL DONE. I recieved my order and the meat was undercooked. The owner said he would NOT make me a new one. He said i have to call 45 minutes before i get to the resturant and he would have it well done for me. I think that would be called TAKE OUT. However, I sat there fuming at the horrible experience i had. Including the tone of voice he used with me, the way he screams at his employees the whole time and belittles them, and the way he talks on the phone the whole time YELLING. So my family and I have decided not to ever go to the House of Joy again. And please pass the word this is not a family oriented resturant.\r \r PROS: NONE\r CONS: FOOD, CUSTOMER SERVICE, STAFF

I just ordered some take out. Well instead of being tasty it was hardly eatible. The price was about a third more then it should have been and due to taste it wasn't worth it at all. Please there are many more places in the area which have better service and much better taste as well as price. The food was cold at that.

service was unacceptable , food were very disappointed, and overall experience unpleasant. I would not recommended to anyone!!!!!!!

I did not like the food because it was not very pleasing, second the service was not attenative and very rude. Moreover, there was a little Chinese man talked very loud on the phone and was very impolite to the customers by telling the customers to leave if they do not like his food. I thought that was very unprofessional and uncall for. Overall, I certainly would not recommended.

First I didn't like the food because it was too cold when the food was served. Second my friends saw something in the food and I thought it was disgusting. Last and foremost, the little man in front kept splitting on the floor.

My husband and I have been searching for a chinese restaurant who serves their take out in those chinese take out boxes like in the movies. We had been ordering take out from this restaurant for awhile (which was always great)but one day when I picked up our order it came in the little boxes we were searching for!! so, I would like to say that I now want to order from there a lot more. I know their food is good, but, what can i say.... I have always been a sucker for packaging : )
