I have gone to Dr.
I have gone to Dr. Kohnen for almost a decade - before he even started this practice. He has one of the top practices in San Antonio and keeps up on developments in medicine and equipment. He will say if something is not his expertise and will send you to a specialist. I do rescues at times and have a number of dogs and cats. Some have had some conditions requiring expensive tests. He discusses the pros and cons of testing if you ask. If your animal is elderly or very ill, then he is not aggressive in treatment or testing - always keeping in mind the quality of the animal's life.
He is not cheap - neither is he the most expensive. But you are getting an excellent vet with an A&M education, who has kept his education current.
I had a diabetic cat and diabetic dog. My dog lived with diabetes for 8 years and I consider Dr. Kohnen very well versed in treating diabetic animals. He also diagnosed Immune mediated syndrome in one of my dogs and another had PLE! So, I would say there is little he has not seen.
I would add to all this that Dr. Kohnen and his staff are charming, friendly and helpful. His vet techs are great as is the groomer on premises. -

As noted with other reviews, he is not cheap - neither is he the most expensive. But you are getting an excellent vet with an A&M education, who has kept his education current.
His practice is also not a pharmacy for people who are not clients. If you do not intend to bring your animal for annual exams, he will not sell you meds as was noted by another reviewer. I had a diabetic cat and diabetic dog and never had any difficulty getting insulin. My dog lived with diabetes for 8 years and I consider Dr. Kohnen very well versed in treating diabetic animals.
