General Info:
BRIGHTON CENTER is a nonprofit organization devoted to supporting children with disabilities and their families, while educating our community on the importance of inclusion. The program was started in 1969 by a group of parents who had children with Down's syndrome, who believed in their children's abilities. These parents wanted to ensure that their children would have an opportunity to achieve their highest potential and founded the Brighton School where their children could learn and develop. As the public schools began improving the quality and array of special education services, many parents transferred their children to neighborhood schools. At the same time, early intervention became a national focus as parents with infants and toddlers with disabilities could not find suitable services. After Senator Lloyd Benson visited Brighton, he ardently supported national legislation which funded the delivery of early intervention services. In 1983, with a grant from the Texas Interagency Council on Early Childhood Intervention (ECI), Brighton's ECI program enrolled 28 children. Today, Brighton has expanded services throughout a five county region and serves about 2,700 children and families each year through ECI services, two inclusive early learning centers and family education and advocacy programs. The Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) program serves nearly 1,600 infants and toddlers each year from birth to three years annually. These children are delayed in the development of daily life skills such as walking, talking, eating and playing with others. BRIGHT BEGINNINGS inclusive Child Development Program and Preschool combined serve and serves up to 160 infants, toddlers and pre-school children ages 6 weeks to age 5 throughout the year. This program includes both children with and without developmental delays and disabilities. The program helps children of all abilities grow, learn and play together. The Special Education Support Services (SESS) program is an advocacy program for parents of children with disabilities and developmental delays. It is designated to empower parents to assist in their child's development through education, advocacy training and support services. PRECIOUS MINDS is Brighton's parent education program designated to teach good parenting skills and provide support for parents of children with special needs. PRICE RANGE Over 75% of all services are provided at no cost to the family. Scholarships available.
