Anyone who has problems with their care at the VA should be aware of their right to sue them under the Federal Tort Claims Act (two year statute of limitation). I found some basic info here.
Lawsuits for malpractice help insure that administrators correct the problems, not ignore them... http://vamalpractice.info/?page_id=2507
I was mentally wounded while I was on active duty. I asked my primary care doctors to send me to see a mental doctor. My primary care doctor refused. Finally, I told my doctor that aliens from outerspace were attacking me. After 5 years, I finally got sent to see a psychiatrist. I went to the psychiatrist and they diagnosed me as paranoid schizophrenia and massive depressive disorder. However, I also have ADD. I told the doctors for 3 years that I have ADD and would like to treat it. I had to talk to the mental doctors for 3 years about ADD. Then, finally my new doctor decided to treat it. I had been waiting a total of 8 years to treat my ADD.
Drs. Epstein & Xiou, Neurosurgeons correctly diagnosed my back problems that had left me semi-paralyzed & in relentless pain for years. I woke up and the pain in my legs was gone. As an OR nurse myself, I can say that the nursing care on 2W was some of the most caring & competant I've ever experienced. I walked into Audie MurphyVA Hospital bent over like a little old lady & walked out straight as a dancer thanks to Dr. Epstein, Dr. Xiou & team. I still need a total hip replacement & will ask for surgery here as soon as allowed!
The substandard care given in the military and the VA's are a disgrace. I've been treated like cattle, not a human being. These Dr's dont compare to the civilian care I've received. I dont trust them. Their attitudes are "Its free healthcare, what more do you want?" The general surgeon Dr. Savu operated on me and I've had nothing but complications afterwards. If I were smart I'd use a civilian and use my own insurance, even if means having a copay!!
Audie Murphy VAMC is the Finest I've ever experienced!!!Everything about the center can be expressed by exceeds expectations!!!From the time you arrive until you leave everyones attitudes is evident EXCELLENCE and COMPASSION in ACTION!!! I'm truly feel proud to be a Veteran among those who are so devoted to our care!!! I drive 240 miles each way,but do that because I know the Care I receive is simply the BEST!!!
I WILL NOT go to a civilian hospital!!! Did that a couple of times and it was horrid. I've had a couple of upper and lower GI's, Laranyx repair, a double bypass due to a heart attack. If you can rate a hospital up there with a 5 star hotel, well this is it!! the heart attack and following allergic reaction to morphine caused me to have to apologize to the nurses and dr's.for my rude behavior. They were understanding and did not expect me to as tooo many ppl do this. They had only my best interest at heart, were understanding and loving while i was the worst patient from below. I was emberassed at my attitude and treatment of them. Never once did they loose their cool with me when it was warranted. 3.5 weeks due to heart attack, surgery and they were angels. I tried not to bother them as I know they are busy, understaffed, underpaid and have many NEEDY personalities to contend with. Removal of the chest drainage tubes I have to say was a pleasant experience as the nurses were well versed in making it painless. And they allowed me to sleep as i have problems with it. If they took pressures they did it such a way as not to wake me. I have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING bad to say of this hospital. I was treated like a queen each time I was there.
To each and every worker there from the housekeeping staff to the dr's I THANK YOU for my life!! And for finding problems I had no idea existed but only through your extensive and sometimes odd tests and caring, those problems are fixed or being handled.
To my ANGELS thank you. And my family thanks you also.
Dr. Edward Sako my veteran brothres refuse to have surgery with this doctor you reget it if you do. If you love your family and want to spare them pain as my mine did because of his fualt I am now disabled and whats worst is that he as well as the hospital and V. A. refuse to take responsiblity. You have been warned this doctor is a danger to your health
I must wait until all transactions are complete in case of retaliation. The medical information release guy must be one bad dude or may be Audie Murphy supports bad behavior. I can tell by my conversation on the phone. When some one illustrates such an attitude and is not even sure who he is talking with then he is not even concerned about his job. Other facilities have started weeding out these guys, After I drive to san Antonio and complete my business then I will have this guys name and be able to shoot some rockets.
While in the process of reaching our vacation destination, my husband fell and broke his hip and was hospitalized
in the Audie Murphy VA Hospital. Believe me it was not the vacation we had planned but we are sooooo
thankful we were in that area when he fell. We were very satisfied with his eleven day stay there. From the time
I drove into the emergency entrance until he was dismissed 11 days later, we were treated with respect, love,
attention and caring doctors and nurses. We could not have asked for better care while on the 4th floor. We
shall always feel indebted to all the staff there. They were super! I stayed at Days Inn fairly close to the
hospital and the owner and workers there were very considerate and took care of every need. Thanks so
much San Antonio.

The warmth and caring of the people on the Hospis floor were outstanding. My brother was in the military for 38 years and they made his last 2 weeks on this earth as comforting as possible. My family was treated with love, understanding, and caring . The people on this floor are very over worked and I am sure under paid but they don't show it to the people who are there or their families. The whole city , from the cab drivers to the wait staff at the resteraunts were wonderful to us. The hotel accross the street even gives discounts to family members.
this was a very difficult time for my whole family but they gave us the time and respect that we needed to say goodbye to our brother.
Thank you to all who work there
