My wife and I are down for the weekend and decided to check Cowboy's out. When we arrived we were greeted at the door by a courteous doorman and easily made our way into the club where we saw a variety of activities to keep us entertained....namely the dance floor with a full stage with lights, smoke, and everything. They even had a cover band that was honestly one of the better ones I have seen in my almost six years of living in Texas. There were many fully stocked bars and standing behind them were bar tenders that were attentative and seemed to keep the waiting down to a minimum. For those of us that chose beer over liquor there were also several beer stations that kept you from waiting in line behind people ordering multiple mixed drinks. This place has a bull, card and pool tables, and decent seating. Oh, and you can get food there too if you so choose. If you forgot your cowboy hat...they have you covered. There is a gift shop with some hats for both the ladies and the guys. In the four or so hours we were there we noticed that the bouncers were on their game because the rif-raf was non-existant. Those too young to drink did have an M written on both hands and were required to wear wristbands but that is understandable. I know that back home alot of the places make minors wear a shirt that announces their inability to purchase alcohol so I dont think that a mark and wristband is such a bad break. We had an outstanding time and plan on going back the next time we are in San Antonio.
I am not sure if many places...especially of the fast food sorts...would fit the bill for a 5-star rating. Still, Podna's Catfish and Po'Boys was an easy choice for a top rating. Having spent 6 months living in San Antonio, this place became one of my favorites. Although it is a place that could be easily overlooked on Austin Highway, and generally would not be fit for a 30 minute lunch if you work downtown, I found as many opportunities to go back as my co-workers would allow. The food in general is really good, but of course, you should shoot for the po'boys. My favorite was the 12" 1/2 fried oyster, 1/2 fried shrimp. Whatever you choose, it is overflowing with meat, the roll that it comes in is fresh and the sauce that you can add on your own is great. The fries weren't necessarily my favorite, but they are still really tasty and not overly fried or salty. This is a pretty basic restaurant, and watch out for the high noon lunches, as it might be difficult to find a table. But the staff is really nice and the owner, who willingly shares about his visit to New Orleans which led to the start of his business, is definitely a friendly character. Although I was never that rushed, they even have a drive-through, and I have heard that you can call in orders and have them cater. Now, I am off to new eating adventures in Dallas, TX as a next step in my own professional pursuits, but Podna's will definitely be on my list when I take my next trip to SA.
I love Rookies. I know that there were some concerns about the manager but I believe that the issue has been addressed and she is no longer there. I am not a regular, but my pours have always been extremely generous. I know there were some general concerns about the owner, and all I can say is that he is super nice and the driving force behind a great place to hang. He is down to earth and more than likely you have met him and thought he was just a friendly guy at the bar. Definitely a bar that you need to swing by and have a drink at whether youre a regular or not! Also...Rookies beverage catering is the best option for your parties. I had mentioned to a friend that I knew this bar that catered and she used them for a graduation party. Not only were there generous pours...they never ran out of liquor (unlike some catering companies)! Even if you never go to rookies bar I would use the catering service in a heartbeat.
