Vaccination
Puppies and kittens receive initial protection against infectious diseases from their mother’s milk as long as she has been regularly vaccinated. However, this protection only lasts for a few weeks and so your new addition will need to be vaccinated from an early age. Many puppies or kittens will go to their new homes having already received their first vaccinations but check with their former owner when you collect them. If they have not yet been vaccinated, we recommend that get their first vaccinations done as soon as possible after taking ownership of them.

Parasites Treatment and Control
Fecal testing may also be required and so you may be asked to provide a stool sample from your pet. Fecal testing is vital to allow your veterinarian to check for internal parasites that live in your pets’ gastrointestinal tract. These parasites can be deadly in pets and cause health problems for humans. Examples include roundworms and hookworms.
Behavioral Disorder Treatment
Spread by bodily fluid contact, there is no specific treatment, and dogs with severe symptoms often die. Those who survive commonly have neurological difficulties later in life. Symptoms include fever, coughing, diarrhea, and vomiting.
Pain Management
Although vocalizing can indicate discomfort, it is usually not a sign of pain (instinctively most pets will not vocalize because, in the wild, this would attract predators!). Often, pets vocalize due to the excitement or agitation that they feel on leaving the hospital and returning to their familiar home environment. If crying or whining is mild and intermittent, you may simply monitor the situation. If vocalization persists, please call us for advice. In some cases, a sedative may be prescribed or pain medication may be adjusted.

A bacteria-based disease usually spread by infected water. It causes fever, lethargy, vomiting, bloody diarrhea, and jaundice in your pet. Severe infections can cause organ failure and death. It can be treated by antibiotics but the bacteria can be carried for months afterward and their urine will remain a health hazard to both other animals and humans. Leptospirosis in humans can be fatal.

Canine Bordetella is a respiratory disease called Infectious Tracheobronchitis (Kennel Cough). It is easily transmitted through the air. It is a viral infection complicated by bacteria. Both intranasal and injectable vaccines are available.

Leptospirosis Treatment
Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease. It is spread by wildlife (raccoons, skunks, opossums, squirrels, rats) and domestic animals. It can be passed to people and cause severe disease. Canine Lepto has risen dramatically in recent years. Infected animals shed Lepto bacteria in the urine. To prevent Lepto in your dog, discourage your pet from drinking standing water and vaccinate yearly.
Parvovirus Infection Treatment
Infection is passed via bodily fluid contamination, and the virus can survive in the environment for prolonged periods. There are two types of the virus, a kennel cough type infection, and a liver infection (hepatitis). Symptoms are almost identical to parvovirus. The symptoms can be treated rather than the main disease, but most dogs will survive.

At Animal Hospital of Salinas, we take all anesthetic cases very seriously. We thoroughly screen all of our patients to make sure there are no hidden complications by performing exams before every anesthesia procedure and requiring minimum baseline lab testing based on species, breed, and age. We utilize multimodal pain management, which reduces post-operative pain and reduces the depth of anesthesia we use, which increases safety. All of our patients who undergo procedures have an IV catheter and fluids to help bolster their blood pressure. We use extensive monitoring of our patients under anesthesia, using our ECG machine which monitors oxygen saturation, blood pressure, and temperature. One of our medical team is assigned to your pet, from the initial exam, through pre-anesthetic medications, anesthesia, and post-operatively. For your pet’s safety, we only perform one surgical procedure at a time. We use an objective pain scoring system in order to make sure that, if your pet is in pain, they immediately get the relief they need.
Periodontal Disease Treatment
Dental disease involves more than just bad breath. Approximately 80% of patients that visit us on a daily basis need professional teeth cleaning. When bacteria irritate the gum line, the gums become inflamed in the early phases the disease-causing gingivitis. Left untreated, this leads to periodontal disease which causes loss of the bone/support structure of the tooth and subsequent tooth loss. In addition, the bacteria are consistently released into the bloodstream allowing for systemic infections which can cause organs, such as the kidney, liver, and heart to function improperly.

Wound and Fracture Care
This disease is thought to require very close contact of infected cats to be spread, such as milk from mother to kitten or bite wounds. Much more common in city areas, and among un-neutered and stray cats. Multi-cat households also present a higher risk. The symptoms include poor body condition and coat, anorexia, diarrhea, and jaundice. The virus attacks the bone marrow which results in leukemia and sometimes lymphoma.
