Although most of the staff was sweet, the director and the adoption guru did not seem to want to place a 4 year old dog with a loving family. He said "she(meaning the dog) has been here a while, she's not going anywhere" and that we could try again on Monday. This was at 3 pm and close time was 4:30. Because the vet for our cat was no longer in business, the director walked into the office and shut door. Didn't care about a sad 6 yr old or the fact that the dog would live in a cage for...view more a few more days or forever, it seemed. Very uncaring to say the leastview lessShare Review
If I could give one start I would. This place was a joke from the moment we walked in, the front desk was incredibly RUDE. We let it go and asked to see some dogs that were available, because the dog my brother had since he was 12 (who is now 22 and has a degree in animal behavior and in his second year for veterinary technician) had just passed. We were directed to the side room and saw the dogs running in and out of their doggy doors to an outside play area. We assumed we could w...view morealk out there to meet the dogs because there were about 5 other people back there playing with them also. The front desk came back and proceeded to yell at us about being back there (there also was no sign stating we couldn't. Just to close the kennels before opening the door back into the shelter). Alright, we complied, it being our VERY FIRST visit there. We told them the dog we wanted to see and they allowed him to play with us in the 'family room', along with my chihuahua that I brought from home. My brother and I always let our dogs play together and he wanted something that would get along with other dogs because he is a dog trainer.
The front desk had us fill out papers and wait and wait until finally she said, "Sorry you can't adopt. Your vet said your previous dog was not neutered." Wow.... so a dog that was over 10 years old was supposed to be neutered before you can adopt another one? Pretty sad and petty, he was never bred and coming to a shelter is the last place you'd find a dog of pedigree breeding. You're looking for a companion not a stud. BTW their adoptable dog was already neutered so I do not see the big deal. The vet confirmed the visits and that he had his shots, deworming, flea and tick meds etc... I don't know what these people want but I can only assume she didn't 'like us' from the get go. This place receives funds from the Pinellas Animal Control along with donations from people like me and you. They are unwilling to allow the poor animals into fabulous home because of wanting to feel in control. There are other shelters in this area that NEED the funds way more than this place, DO NOT ADOPT FROM HERE. Not that you'll get far anyways.view less
I think this is the best web site for people looking for pets. I have one dog from an animal shelter she is the best dog I have ever had. And I'm planning on getting another dog from this shelter. When I saw him and he melted my heart and I think a dog from a shelter is better than a puppy. If I could I would save every animal I will tell all my friends about this website.Share Review
I was on the internet looking for a Pet Shelter and up pops Pet Pal. There was a colored photo of 8 or 10 doggies. I was wanting a ShihZu because I had this breed before, and this was what I was looking for. I had no idea that I would have any luck. If any other breed had popped up that and stole my heart, I would have chosen him or her, it made no difference. Right there before my very eyes was my little one. He was a ShihZu and little and was 5 yrs old. He was going to be mine....view more I jumped in the car, and headed straight to the shelter. I was afraid I wouldn't make it before they closed, and someone would probably get there before me. I had made a 8x10 photo of him from my computer. I got there, walked in with the photo and said I'm looking for this little doggie name Buddy. They said he was there and wating for me. I was so happy. Someone called while I was there filling out the papers and guess who she wanted? They told her, I'm sorry, he's being adoped as we speak. I have my little dog, which I renamed him Brandy. We are so happy to have him. He is so loved. Thanks to Pet Pal Shelter for taking such good care of him. He was so clean, had the micro chip, spaded, and vet checked. All the animals were well taken care of. I know I will go to the shelter if I decide to adopt Brandy a little brother or sisterview lessShare Review
