To be honest, the best japanese in St. Louis!

This restaurant is one of the best japanese cuisene I have ever visited. I go thre occasionally with my dad as well as with my japanese class as to expierience a traditional japanese meal. The menu is gigantic (not including the sushi) and with the sushi it outbeats most restaurants for selection. When it comes to pricing It is right on par with the quality and quantity of food. The waitresses greet you as soon as you walk into the door, however sometimes you have to wait a little while to be seated without a reservation. but from there you are taken to a tatami floored booth, the sushi bar, or a table. The tatami flooring is a little uncomfortable and not good for people with RLS (restless leg syndrome) or in a short skirt/dress. The bar is by far the best place to be. At the bar you can watch your food be made and watch other people food as well as extravagent sushi dishes be made as well. The tabes are placed up higher that the rest of the restaurant which is a cool place to be as you can look over all the other people enjoying their food. Food service can also be a little slow with or without a reservation however it is worth the wait. This place has maintained its splendor over the 5 years I have been going there. I highly recommend this as a place to eat.

What happened to this place?

When I was in college, this was one of our fav. japanese places, but on a recent trip back, I found the place had deteriated. The service was so slow even though it was a Tuesday night when half the restaurant was empty! The food was also subpar compared to what the I remembered.

I've been eating there for over a decade

Tachibana is my favorite Japanese Restaurant in St. Louis. All of the employees are curteous. The menu is not very big but EVERYTHING is good which in my opinion is more important. Sushi is always excellent and the owner is often walking around the restaurant making sure everyone is satisfied. Also Tachibana is authentic and very reasonably priced.

A very good option

While not quite top tier, Tachibana is still a very good option for sushi in St. Louis. The selection is excellent for St. Louis, with a few harder to find items, and the rice and fish always very good to excellent. And they easliy have the best lunch values -- 5.95 for a nigiri/roll combo or chirashi! I've never had a bad meal there.

Not the best, but excellent value

One of few Japanese joints in St. Louis whose menu prices are competitive to Coastal restaurants, I come here mainly for the value. To say their food is average is quite harsh, as this restaurant obviously caters to a less sophisticated crowd. On most days, I would rather come to this place and enjoy a nice meal than spent an extravagant tab and get unsatisfying portions.

I recommend their combination plates and entrees over their nigiris simply because their sashimi just isn't up to par. Their Donburi's, steak dishes, and other cooked items, however, are quite excellent. Their services, while not the most attentive, are good enough for me. The place is a bit cramped and don't separate the smoking from the non-smoking section. One last thing, be sure to make reservation, as they take priority on reservers even if you've been waiting there for a while.

Slow food and a very rude manager

Our group of 5 gradually received our meals over about a 40-minute period. No two people received their meal at the same time. By the time the last meal arrived, some people were already finished eating.

During this time, the servers were polite, yet made conflicting excuses as to why our food was taking so long. One server promised to wait 5 minutes and then ask the kitchen for our food. Wnen we finally complained to the manager, she was extremely rude and brusquely told us that we didn't understand how a restaurant operates. After trying to placate us with a variety of flimsy excuses, she stormed away from our table, although she did take one entree off of our check. Overall, the restaurant was disappointing and unenjoyable.

Agreeing with the Editorial

While the service was excellent, the food left a lot to be desired, primarily from lack of options.

Menu was simply too limited, and the udon was standard fare.

Their rolls were also loosely rolled. Japanese is as much of the presentation as it is the food, and this was sub-par in my book.

My Japanese Home

The best table in the house is up at the left side of the bar so that you can watch Kenji-son work his magic. The menu is a fine sampling of very good Japanese food, but if you are a sushi fan you don't have to stick to the menu. Kenji is always willing to make you something special

Excellent Authentic Food

I've been to most restaurants in the area that serves sushi and Tachibanas is the best without a doubt.
I've tried many of their other dishes and they are also great. If you've never tried sushi and want to try it, this is the place to go.
