For many years I swore off Ice Cream...too much fat, sugar, I put on weight and decided I had enough in my younger days for this life time. Then my elderly, dementia father moved in with me the last year of his life. He couldn't remember much, but did remember his love for ice cream-ice cream-ice cream, we all scream for... anyway I'd take him to Serendipity cause you could park right outside the front door on Big Bend. I broke down and had a cone with him once, then again and another time too. The stuff is just so damn good I couldn't help myself anymore. Serendipity definitely makes THE BEST St. Louis ice cream - I say so and so did my dad, he was 89 when he died and he should know after 89 years. After his funeral mass, I hired Serendipity to set up a hot fudge sundae station in the Church basement in celebration of his love for Ice Cream... they did a great job and it was worth every penny. The Gold Coast Chocolate is my favorite... just make sure you wipe your mouth off after eating as there will be dark, chocolate smears around your lips... yummm!

If you love ice cream and like to build your own, this is the place for you. The approach is simple: get a cup, fill the cup with whatever flavors of yogurt they have that day/night, add your own toppings including fresh fruit, put it on the scale to be weighed and you are ready to eat. There is only one size cup which is fairly large. So be careful not to overdo it. It's not more expensive than most places unless you really overfill your cup. You have to watch your kids closely too. The place always seems clean and they have both indoor and outdoor seating. Fun place to take out of town visitors for something different.
The Custard Station is a Kirkwood landmark for both it's custard and it's location. Enjoy the trains going by, the park and take the kids to visit the firemen across the street if they have their doors open. Lines can be long in the summer, but don't be fooled...the line usually moves very quickly (like Ted Drewes). Plus, it gives you time to visit with whomever your with. The Custard Station is one of our families regular ice cream "haunts" in the summer!!
