- Founder of the Ohio Valley Coal Company, Robert E. Murray, established the company following his last day as president and chief executive officer of the North American Coal Corporation in 1987. For many years, a number of people told Murray he should start his own coal company. In 1988, he acquired Ohio Valley from the North American Coal Corporation. At the time of the acquisition, the company s Powhatan No. 6 mine, formerly owned by a subsidiary company of NACC, employed nearly 300 people and produced slightly more than 1 million tons of coal per year. The mine now employs nearly 500 people and produces more than 5 millions tons of coal per year. The Ohio Valley Coal Company maintains its corporate headquarters in Alledonia, Ohio.
