The Desert Sands Motel at 16th & G Street is a public nuisance, a hideous eyesore and a blight in the Mansion Flats - 16th Street Corridor. The people who own it let it become a derelict wreck. They can't actually rent rooms out to tenants because it has so many code violations - not even qualifying for a welfare motel flop house. The parking lot is a hang out for drug addicts and street people. The cops are there all the time. Why doesn't the City Council and Code Enforcement condemn it and tear it down? What mystifies me is a few years ago a Real Estate Developer offered the owners $6 million to buy it and develop it - prime downtown property - but the owners TURNED the offer down! I think the owners must be feeble minded? They are elderly and do not speak English. I hope people who live in the neighborhood of 17th & G go to City Hall to condem the property - it needs to be turned into apartments for affordable downtown housing - or tear it down and build a grocery store - which is what downtown neighborhood REALLY needs!
