Going to this restaurant was extremly special and brought back a lot of memories. I had never been there before so let me explain. My husband and I moved from Santa Barbara a few months ago and for our first date, celebrations, and our dinner before the wedding fro the wedding party we went there. The restaurant in Santa Barbara is named Carlitos and we had many many wonderful memories there, not to mention the best Mexican food I have ever had (and mexican food is my favorite so I've been to a lot of places). I didn't think I would ever find another place like that moving to Sacramento. Santa Barbara is known for their beaches of course, and State Street, but also for their restaurants. Living in Elk Grove, I have to branch out to find real restaurants because this town is made up of chains. Thank you Ernesto's for being our new place for many memories to come. I had fish tacos (the Mexican street tacos) and they were amazing. My husband has gotten the carnitas before and said they were wonderful, however the enchiladas I will past on in the future. Oh yea, and their salsa is so fresh and my husband and I ate the whole bowl they offered to us. I hope to try their quac in the future!

I wasn't planning to buy lunch but a homeless, hungry, diabetic man asked for some food and not cash. I went to El Faro across the way and spoke to the owner Hugo about the situation and asked him to pay for half the meal for the hungry guy and I would pay for half and by myself a meal for his kindness in helping out. Hugo said I did not need to buy myself a meal and he bought the guy some healthy food that would not hinder blood sugar issues. I went ahead and bought myself a burrito as a good will/thank you gesture which was out of this world. Excellent seasoning, tender chicken, great proportions. I will now be a regular supporter b/c of the owner's good deed and b/c the food and service are excellent. Please show your support for El Faro and Hugo, we need more like this to help out those who for whatever reason have lost their way!
Xochimilco is that hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant you hope to find. When we lived nearby, my daughter and I made it "our" restaurant... always sat in the same place, ordered the same thing, new the staff by name. Twice now I have meet people who wanted to show me their favorite restaurant that "nobody knows about," and both times it turned out to be this place! Super grubbin' food, giant portions, and delicious! I recommend the steak rancheros. Spoon some of it into the homemade tortillas and learn what heaven tastes like. The only downside is the parking lot and less than great intersection/neighborhood. The owners also travel to farmers' markets and set up a booth with a limited menu. It isn't nearly as good as the brick and mortar location, but it's still ok.
I've been going as a kid and still drop in to check if Caballo is still consistant with the enchiladas and chile verde. So far so good! My only complaint is that once in a while the rice is a bit dry but more often its nice and soft. The flour chips are home made, and i honestly havent been to another restaurant that offers flour chips like this place does. I say just try the place if you havent yet and bring your appetite. Lastly, I dont know why people even compare the El Novirello down the street to Caballo Blanco.. there salsa at El Novi just taste like bottled Pace picante if you want my opinion. CB may be more mexican/american food, but they always make it so good. My mouth is watering for a Torta de Pollo right now actually.
I'm literally eating their food right now. Wonderful food, relaxed quiet laid back and clean atmosphere, good place to eat out with a friend or take-out. ALWAYS good service, and ALWAYS good yummy food, complicated order not a problem. I always leave happy! Prices seem a little stiff until you get your meal and realize it's tomorrows lunch too. Huge portions. Free chip, salsa, guac bar. The game always on. They put Nutmeg in the Hortchata which I hate but everything else is consistently awesome! Must try for out of towners and for people wanting authentic tasting food without the 10 hour drive to the border.
El Gallo is a great place for a reasonably priced lunch or dinner. The bar is always full of regulars and new people. It is a fun and friendly atmosphere. There is live music a couple nights a week. Much better than some of the stuffy bars around. Not a singles hookup place but rather a fun place to bring friends and have a couple drinks and/or dinner. There are weekly specials for lunch and dinner. Occasioanlly the owner creates a new dish not on the menu. Recently I tried a basa filet over cilantro rice with a mango and avacado salsa for only $9.99. It was outstanding. Highly recommend.
La Casa has great food and a wonderful friendly ambiance! Our party of 4 and a 1 month old baby were warmly greeted, allowed to pick our place to seat and the service was great and very accomodating to our needs. We went on a Thursday night they had accoustic guitar singer playing old and new latin/R&B music. The food was very tasty, hot and plated nicely with the refried beans in a separate saucer on the plate. We can't wait to go back and enjoy the pleasure fo good food, great service, and to be lulled by the great accoustic singer.
I have been going to Xochimilco for years now, so that in itself should tell you something...They're the real deal! You can't find a better plate of Mexican food anywhere. Oh, there are some who compete...SOME, not many...No one has a better menu for the price, and those that do are probably family! I am getting ready to go there for a big plate of the best, and a Tecate on tap...Friday's are fantastic at Xochimilco! Try it! I bet you'll agree!
My father and I have been eating at Los Jarritos for the last six years; it is the best place in town to get a good meal at a very reasonable price. For around five dollars you can get a combination of your choice. You can pick two from: tacos, enchiladas, tamales, burritos and so on... the combination comes with rice and beans. It tastes great and definitely fills you up! My father and I will continue to be long time customers of Los Jarritos!
This is the best hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant in the area. Sure you can get fancier meals, but this is the place to go if you want solid food from any part of the menu. Workers in the area know it, too. There is usually a line out the door from noon to 12:30. But it goes fast and the staff are fantastic. Tip: try the breakfast burritos. You have to specify exactly what you want on it, but they are amazing.
