RUSSELLVILLE -- A local businessman who claimed he was a victim of an attempted robbery Monday afternoon now faces perjury charge, authorities said today.
Trevor Hugh Hardy, 23, 908 Villagewood Drive, Russellville, is charged with first-degree perjury, false reporting an incident and rendering a false alarm, Russellville Police Chief Chris Hargett said.
Hardy, who owns H&H Computer and Electronics on U.S. 43 in Russellville, reported a man tried to rob him at his business but ran off, police said.
Russellville police investigator Lt. Scotty Lowery said Hardy told police they shot at each other as the suspect was running away.
Lowery said police did an extensive search in an effort to find the suspect but nothing materialized.
Hargett said Hardy was questioned by investigators Tuesday and admitted to making up the story, but never said why.
Hardy is out of jail on bail of $10,000. He is under a court order to undergo a mental evaluation.
First-degree perjury is a Class C felony and is punishable by 1-10 years in jail if convicted. The other charges are misdemeanors.
