Recently, I lost a cat of 20 years. After visiting numerous Humane Society/SPCA facilities, I decided upon a 9 nine year old cat who was also good with dogs. He lived at the Rome Humane Society. We went into the get to know them room and we bonded. I received a sad story from one of the workers about the cat's original owner who was elderly, had to give him up and had come in crying. Yep, this was was the cat for me. My husband and I offered a down payment to hold him. We were told : No need, Angelo wasn't going anywhere. Monday morning, (late Saturday was the visit) I called and was informed about a pre-adoption background check. This was a two and a half day event . I politely fulfilled all of the obligations requested ( gritting my teeth as I was spoken to as if I were a 6 year old child throughout this entire process ) Finally, I received the call....... Im cleared !...... I was told to just bring a cat carrier or they could sell us one when we got there. I arrived at the shelter, cat carrier in tow. Three employees were there. I was informed that Angelo was adopted this morning. They left a message on our machine last night that someone else was interested ( We were out of town, however we left the cell # with them,we had it with us, and they did not use it) For the FIRST TIME throughout this entire process, I was informed about a first come, first serve policy, as well as a down payment requirement in order to hold an animal. I received no apologies.
